View Full Version : .COM, .NET, or .ORG
kb@iy-2 10-15-2001, 08:23 PM Which do you prefer to register/use?
Personally I prefer .org to anything because it stands out from all of the coporate .com s without costing an arm and a leg when comparing prices (ie .cc, .tv, etc.). I also like .net s, but only in certain cases. I have registered one or two .com s before, but I probably won't ever again, they're to standard and uniform.

.com
.com because its the most popular and most people are familar with it. after that i'd say .net
Synergy 10-16-2001, 12:07 AM it really depends what you will be using it for....
For Companies:
.com
.net
Dexter 10-16-2001, 10:21 AM well I prefer .com becuase people are so use to it... however I've reged a few .nets becuaes it was a "network" of sites and I wanted to emphasize that.
basicusers.net is the main one, BTW...
Asher S 10-16-2001, 11:46 AM If you're a company which is set out to make profit then you must not use .org, its a tld for non profit organizations. .Net is acceptable for webhosts because in a sense webhosts are networks. .Com is by far the most popular. I think the new tlds of .biz and .info are gonna be the next popular thing. .CC and .TV are not gtlds they're cctlds 'overhyped', they really have no value in a true sense. You wont see any 'professional' webhosting running on a .cc, .tv or .ws domain.
Regards,
Asher.

Well, the original intention behind .org was to assign it only to non-profit institutions. However with the time also companies purchased .org domains. I am not aware of any rule, which would prevent that. However AFAIK there are some actions going on to bring .org to its original intention.

They are probably all "overhyped" :). But after all, why shall a .com domain have more value than a .cc one? Both are usual domains (one a generic one (however always associated with the USA) and the other one a country specific) and both are promoted quite well. Sure its funny to see, that the domain of Western Samoa shall stand for "Website", but those are just marketing tricks. I can very well imagine, that a professional runs a .cc domain, because in this hierachy are still some good names available. One good example is http://www.lion.cc, which is a well-known book/cd/dvd online store in Austria and Germany.

nelson 10-18-2001, 06:09 AM I like the .net version best, but have also registered the .com version and pointed it to the .net. Only because I think alot of people simply put .com at the end because that is the most popular.
Skeptical 10-18-2001, 06:32 AM I personally like the .cum myself.

hehe, bad example - bancrupt.
Asher S 10-18-2001, 09:17 AM Seriously speaking.... the worldsite.ws people have made many meanings out of .ws such as website -- worldsite and so on. But what most people do not realize is that its actually a country code -- same goes for .cc
In all i think .com and .net rule. When .biz comes out things'll be better.

True, but I do not think a generic tld is in any way better than a country tld.

.com and .net are certainly fine domains, but there are not many names available anymore. Especially .cc was promoted in a way, that it almost lost its country specific status and can be now also rather seen as generic tld.

Asher S 10-18-2001, 09:58 AM Many ccTLDS sound cool -- such as:
the all loved .cc
then .ws
then .to
then .it (kyorules.it ;))
some people like .ly (lybia i think)
There are quite a few cool cctlds but you wont find me using those for a company.

Why not? Especially when the desired name is taken in cno. What about .info?

Asher S 10-18-2001, 10:05 AM The general concept behind a ccTLD is that its designed for the people who live in the country. However the .cc and .ws domains have been promoted in a way such as a GTLD, like many other people said in the forum.
yeah .info is pretty good. I'm thinking of registering a few myself. Its quite generic and its a GTLD approved by ICANN.

I dont need the approval of ICANN to like a tld or not :D. cno has still its "coolness factor" because people made such mysteries around it :) and the evolved to "everyone-wants-them" domains. With .info is this another case. Everyone tries to make it a successor of cno and forces it to be a "all-love-me" domain.
