We currently have shared hosting and recently hosted a video file that shut our site down with only 30GB transfer allowed a month. We plan on having various video's in the future and need to get a dedicated server, apparently. I have no idea where to start!

Try ev1servers.net or servermatrix.com

30GB isn't a lot, and you can always increase the bandwidth allowance at the host you are currently with. If the bandwidth is caused by a particular download, and only at around 30gb, I would say a dedicated server is an overkill.

Why don't you go to your host and ask if they can double the bandwidth and at what price? It's also fairly differently to manage a dedicated server if you do not have the experience or the expertise.

ev1servers are totally unmanaged, so unless you are able to completley manage a server or have somebody who can, they wouldn't be a good choice.

servermatrix i think have various server management plans.

You might want to look in the offers section, you'll find plenty of managed and unmanaged offers there, then perhaps draw up a short list and post for some opinions/feedback of people already using them.

If you arent familiar with linux you may want to get a managed server, although you could spend a few months learning how to use an unmanaged one if you dont need the extra bandwidth just yet.

Alternatively just get a bigger reseller account, lots of hosts do well over 30GB bandwidth, have a look in the shared hosting offers section of the forum

To be frank, if you know zero about managing your own dedicated server, servermatrix wouldn't be sufficient as there's a lot more to server setup, security than just the basic patches now and then.

I really do suggest you just upgrade your plan at your current host if they are good, as moving a site isn't a fun thing to do always.

or get a managed vds. tend to be cheaper and often have more bandwidth.

When I sneeze, four sites on my server double the amount of traffic that you've described. 30 gigs is nothing major, in terms of bandwidth, so either check with your host and see if they'll increase your bandwidth, or look for another hosting solution for you. You definitely don't need a dedicated server, and I don't think you're quite ready for a VDS, either...

Try getting a larger shared account.

my host is powweb.com and the only plan they have is the one I've got :( so there is nothing I cant do in that area. I really just need a place to upload videos to and have the link displayed on my normal site and not have to worry about the amount of traffic. I have no experience with server management...

Ahh, okay. You would do great in moving off of them anyways. Have a looksee around the forums here, check out any potential host thoroughly, ask a TON of questions at random times of the day. Get yourself a list of 5-10 hosts, come back here, update this thread with the things you liked and disliked about those hosts and then ask for advice based on that list.

If you need ideas for what kind of questions to ask, hit us up here, and we'll work our magic for ya. :)

Hello and welcome to WHT pseudonymph,

Will have to say the same although I would add this...
If you think you are going to need a dedicated server in the future (when the host upgrade starts to be more expencive) you might want to go for a managed dedicated server.
Mean while, if you have this idea, wouldn't be a bad idea to start learning how to manage your server.

Hope it helped :)

Still searching....

It's so expensive and we arent making any money off our site. What about creating our own sever. I have a box, just need the software and know-how. What else what I need and is this a good idea?

I have a box, just need the software and know-how.Well, you don't have the most important thing: the know-how. Besides, as the others put it, you don't really need a whole box. A large shared hosting account should be enough for now, and, provided that your bandwidth requirements don't grow very fast, you will not need more than a simple shared account for a while. Then you could go for a VPS or even a dedicated.

Try to get some revenue out of your website. Maybe accept donations or place ads on it. Google Adsense might work too.

Good luck!

Powweb offers 5 gb a Day now... everything else not withstanding, you won't get more bandwidth for the price you are paying. 5gb per day is not enough?

Okay, have you tried the Host Quote feature yet? Have you contacted some of the hosts with signatures in their profiles? Have you looked at the Offers forum here? Have you done a search on Google (stay far away from anyone that offers unlimited HD space or bandwidth/transfer).

Maybe http://findmyhosting.com/AdvancedSearch.asp can help. Do a thorough research on any host you're considering though...

Good luck!

Wait, exactly how much bandwidth do you need? And what's your budget like?

I mean, if 5 GB per day is not enough, maybe consider upgrading to your own dedicated server.

Bandwidth shouldnt be the only reason you upgrade to dedicated. Serving files is low CPU. Any reseller account large enough from a reputable provider should be fine.
