I'm having a bit of trouble installing IE6. The installation of files completes properly, but when I restart my computer and the system files are updated, it gives an error:

"Not enough free memory to run PSTORES.EXE"

Thing is, I have 600K of free conventional memory (according to the MS-DOS mem program) and 512MB of RAM.

IE6 will still run, but whenever I get a DNS error or 404 error, it crashes. For instance, if I tried to go to http://www.fjsdlfhasdljfh.com, or http://www.microsoft.com/jdsjdsjdsa.html, IE would crash.

Any ideas on how to fix?

MSDN says PSTORES.EXE is the protected storage manager. There wasn't much talk about it, but it was mentioned more in problems with Outlook Express. Still, it could be relevant.

Make sure you have enough hard disk space as well as RAM (sounds like your RAM is more than fine. BTW, conventional memory is pretty much irrelevant these days in the windows environment.)

Here's some directions for replacing a corrupted pstores.exe. I would go with the "log rename" and then trying to re-install 6.0:

Also, check out the IE Repair Tool:

Sorry I couldn't find much about IE 6.0 and your problem. Try searching on the error message at Google, etc. You might also want to post your Windows Version, though this probably isn't really the right forum for this...

Thanks for trying, but I've actually covered alot of that already. I only came to this forum because Microsoft doesn't seem to have any support forums. Here's the rundown.

• I have 16GB of free disk space. PSTORES.EXE is 80KB.

• If I use the IE6 repair tool, halfway through the repair process I get the error "Not enough free memory to run PSTORES.EXE"

• I found that knowledgebase article about Outlook before. Following the steps provided gives the error "Not enough free memory to run PSTORES.EXE" when doing the c:\windows\system\pstores.exe -install

• I'm using Windows 98.

Ahhh, you're more of a "frustrated learn-ed" than a lost newbie, eh?

Sounds like you've tried everything I would know to do. Personally in your situation I would either upgrade to 2000 or stay with a lower version of IE. Probably reformat eventually. *shrug* Maybe someone else has more insight.
