I am hosting my web site now but would like to move to a virtual web host to help ease up on the hardware maintenance and free up space in the office.
On a peak month we serve up 4GB of bandwidth with about 14,000 unique hosts. I am running on RH 6.2 LAMP configured server on dual 550 mhz processors which is seems always idle (maybe 3-5% cpu utilization). Disk space needed is probably around 250-300MB at most (given grandfathered copies of edited pages and scripts)
I am sure a reasonably burdened shared host would be fine, but I am concerened that since I have 7 or 8 virtual hosts configured I would have to pay for each one of those even though they are merely IP's and domains assigned to sections of the master site. For example:
http://alexcommgrp.com = /www/alexcommgrp/index.html
http:/csweek.com = /www/alexcommgrp/csw/index.html
http://altfuels.com = /www/alexcommgrp/afv/index.html
and so on.
Given the need to have these "sub-domains" is there a plan or a host that will allow me to continue to offer this convenience to my customers? If I have to pay for each one, then a dedicated host quickly becomes more cost effective.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this and what might make the most sense.
Thanks in advance.
Mike
PS I am delighted that there seem to be a now a whole slew of hosting companys offereing up a fully featured LAMP hosts (at what seems a very reasonable price). A couple of years ago this was far from the case!
