View Full Version : Help, I need a plan with features ...
raylin 10-04-2000, 05:38 AM where can i find plans with following features:
- dedicated IP
- PHP4 + MySQL (PHP3 is OK)
- Virtual Name Server included
(capable of adding parked domains by myself,
most hosting companies offer VNS to resellers only)
- setup < $20 and monthly < $20
- 200+ POPs
- 30 day money back guarantee
(i have to test if my scripts work)
- good support/reputation
- contract monthly
- easy-to-use control panel
- 100+ MB space and 10+ GB transfer
- cron job
- web mail
Am i requiring too much? Or, can anybody give me answers?
Thanks in advance.

GordonH 10-04-2000, 05:58 AM I think you are asking a lot for $20 per month (especially the 10GB bandwidth).
There is nothing to stop you signing up for a reseller plan with VNS (many companies offer this) but it will cost you more than $20 and you might be disappointed with the lack of features with the VNS.
You might like to look at outsourcing your DNS requirements to a specialist company.
You should also think about whether you actually need your own name DNS if you are not reselling.

I don't think you're going to find many hosts giving you access to the DNS server. Just a comment...
raylin 10-04-2000, 02:29 PM Ok, I modify my requirements:
- dedicated IP
- PHP4 + MySQL (PHP3 is OK)
- capable of adding parked domains by myself,
(allow multiple domain names to point to subdirectories
within my main account)
- 200+ POPs
- 30 day money back guarantee
(i have to test if my scripts work)
- good support/reputation
- contract monthly
- easy-to-use control panel
- 100+ MB space, 5+ GB transfer
- cron job
- web mail
Still no plans available out there ?
raylin 10-04-2000, 02:35 PM http://hostrocket.com allow accounts to add domains,
but $2.00/mo each domain is too expensive. Because I
have 30+ domains that I want to park at my account.

Humm... just curious: Why do you have so many domain names?? What do you use them for - are you a developer??
I think that if you explained that to us, someone could have a solution...
I don't think you'll find any *good* company that offers domains for less than $2/mo each....... well, maybe I'm wrong.. (you would probably have to *negotiate* with one, I don't think one would offer that to every customer)
Anyway, if you're a developer (I believe that's it??) you could charge $1 or $2/mo per client.. you'll be mantaining their websites, so $2./mo would be more than a good deal..
DynastyHost 10-04-2000, 03:46 PM I think Annette of Hostmatters offer parked domain without additional cost. Not sure.
I know Alabanza based hosts allow you to Add and park domains from your own control panel if they have that feature enabled for your account.
As far as asking too much, I think the features you requested are available through a lot of hosts, but I don't think many will do it for <$20 a month. You can try and e-mail the hosts that you are interested in and ask them for a discount/promotion or whatever you want to call it. I do it all the time with all sorts of purchases. It's all in the way you ask :)

I believe he means sub-domains, not parked domains..??
You can find a host offering parked domains for free (domains pointing to your *main* directory..)
But if you want domains pointing to *subdirectories*, you should search for *sub-domains*...
I don't think you'll find them free.. these are *usually* used to resell unused space and, if you resell without paying *any* setup and/or monthly fees for the host, that's not a good deal for them..
If he wants domains pointing to subdirectories he will also need wildcards then too, or a cgi script that will be used quite often with that many domains on it.
Sub-domain accounts will cost about the same as domain accounts, there is usually no difference at all between the two accounts.

I don't want to confuse the issue at hand, just to comment that generally the term 'subdomains' refers to something more along the lines of:
http://subdomain.domain.com
-which I don't think he is looking for. I'm not sure what you'd exactly call domains pointing to subfolders, but...
Raylin, if I am correct, this feature is almost the most important thing you need? You seem to want/need to run your own DNS servers. I can tell you that even if you get a dedicated server, you don't always have access to DNS.
Free options out ther aren't going to cut it (most have limits as to the number of domains you can control. Sometimes you can pay to have more, but I still don't think this is what you are looking for.
A few questions: how many domains are you needing to park? Are these already registered, or will you be registering domains? If you will be registering domains, there are registrars that have DNS control.

she does :)
Matt Lightner 10-04-2000, 10:38 PM By parked domains do you mean domains pointing to your main site?
Here is how we usually define these terms:
Subdomain
something.yourdomain.com
Parked domain
yourdomain.org (i.e. another domain pointing to your main site)
Domain pointer
domain2.com (pointing to a sub-directory of your site)
Hope that helps!

Chicken 10-04-2000, 11:22 PM Domain pointer! That's the term! Ohhhh, and my post read a bit wrong... I meant the most important feature you needed was the domain parking and DNS, not subdomains.
I like to explain the parked domain a little different...I tell my clients that a parked domain is a domain that is put on the same IP as the main domain.
It does a little more than point to the main site, because the email for the parked domain works as well, and so do all the sub directories, eg. parkeddomain.org/this/that.htm
goes to maindomain.com/this/that.htm
Just makes parking look a little more functional that simply pointing to the main site, but those were 3 good descriptions that definitely clear up the confusion between them Matt :)
Do people need a wildcard in their .b record for domain pointers to work, or is there another way, like a cgi script? But if they used a cgi script that would need to be the main page before all sites including the main site?
raylin 10-05-2000, 12:04 AM Hi all of you,
GordonH,Chicken,Amplify_girl,DynastyHost,ODE,Greg,Dana,
and Site5-Matt, thank you very much.
I have registered many domains from TWNIC
(http://rs.twnic.net.tw). I think if someboy
interested in these domains then he/she can
email me for websit/domain promotion, domain
reselling, etc. But first, I have to post my
email somewhere. Many registrars provide domain
parking service for domains registered thro them.
But TWNIC don't provide this service. So, I think
if I can park these domains at my main account,
then I can do something to promote my domains.
From your kindly help, I guess all I need is
domain parked instead domain pointers to sub-domains.
I will have a script, say index.cgi, detecting
$HTTP_HOST, and redirect user to difference pages.
Dana,
Hostmatters.com is pretty good for me, but parking domain
feature is available only to resellers, not regular plan, right? Reseller plan costs $35/mo. (I am still thinking
about this...)
The people running hostmatters are good knowledgable people and are probably willing to give you whatever type of plan you are looking for if you email them and ask nice :)
