View Full Version : Sharing a dedicatd server with 4 or 5 people.
Michael_Bray 10-11-2001, 10:45 AM Hi,
I was hoping I could get some feedback from some people here. I was thinking of getting a group of 4 or 5 people from here to share a dedicated server to lower the cost - while having the freedom and benefits of the server.
If I was to organise to have a fast server, such as
Dual Pentium 4 - 1.4Ghz
1GB Ram
9.2GB SCSI Hardisk
And the 5 of us payed say $150 US setup each to cover the hardware then about $40 a month to cover the bandwidth / basic charges, would I be able to get enough interest to get it going?
We would all have our own Apaches/MySQL/PHP etc - It would be like having your own Dedicated server, and the hardware would handle the extra users fairly nicely, and it would be so much cheaper.
Everyone would have to pay 4 or so months in advance to make it work... Payments etc would have to be worked out. I was just curious if there any interest here. I wouldn't do it until January, just need to know if there is any interest :)
Thanks!
Michael Bray
dektong 10-11-2001, 11:04 AM Who got the root (superuser) access in this democratic server?
cheers,

MotleyFool 10-11-2001, 12:45 PM Michael,
You can count me in if it's Jan.. by then my reseller biz would come to a nice shape [hopefully!]

Michael_Bray 10-11-2001, 09:51 PM Dektong,
It would be more of a communist server then a democratic one :) Anyone that wanted the root password could have it would be my policy.
Looks like there is some interest which is good :) - I would rather have a server like this then a low end one to my self.
kaskus 10-12-2001, 11:11 AM hey let me know, im intrested.
send me email or message me so we can talk it..
Dexter 10-12-2001, 12:47 PM sorry if anyone has a problem with it but saw the thread and figured why start a new one when i could post here.
I'd just like to say that I currently have a dedicated server at catalog (600mzh, 128mb ram, redhat6.2) and would be open to sharing space with anyone interested. I'd say probabbly room for 2-3 people depending on how much they use...
disk space is a bit low right now but should we need more it's only like 10/mo to have a second 10gig hd installed...
we have a 100gig/mo transfer rate and though i haven't checked stats as of lately I belive we probabbly are only using someplace in the 25-50gig range.
simply put we split costs equally, I'm paying 183 month and so you can do the math as to your share. I'm pretty open to what you can do with your share (long as it's legal and doesn't break catalogs TOS)
anyone interested can email me. absr_1 (at) hotmail.com
remarkable 10-12-2001, 02:03 PM Why share? You can get a virtual/private server for a fraction of the cost of a dedicated. Many companies sell this technology.
Chicken 10-12-2001, 02:08 PM Moved here so people can be a bit more free to post what they like without worring about self-promotion, etc.

Thanks Chicken!
You don't have to share. You can have your own Private Server at the fraction of the cost of a dedicated. Please check out my services. http://www.remarkablehosting.com/private.php
IM me or email me for more information.
Aseanhosting 10-19-2001, 03:00 PM Do you intend to support ASP ( chiliASP or instantASP for example)
If so I think we can have a business, tell me what's going on with that project
Thanks

Very interesting service you have there. It's a shame you don't offer more bandwidth on all of your plans. :(
ho247 10-21-2001, 04:10 AM Is RemarkableHosting.com down? It's 9AM GMT in the UK and I can't seem to get to the site.

Yeah. If it had more bandwidth it would definately be something I'd be interested in.

Please email me at matthew@remarkablehosting.com with what you need. I can put together a custom plan. Extra options are listed here: http://www.remarkablehosting.com/extra.php
Anything is possible.
ispclub.com 10-23-2001, 01:49 PM www.ispclub.com has been thinking of setting up a plan like this. If anyone is interested please email sales@ezzi.net
Here is how it works
4 people per server
P3-1GHz
1GB RAM
2x40GB RAID-1 HD's
Block of 8IPs each (5 usable)
40GB of monthly data transfer each
Plesk server administrator
Unlimited domains for everyone
Root access for everyone
$150 a month each
No set up fee
12 month contract
This plan is not on our website.
JBIZ718 10-23-2001, 01:55 PM We also do private servers with the ensim product but are not a real big fan of it.
Ensim though isnt bad, we feel it has been a pain. Customers many times over use to many resources and run into problems.
Actually even though we still offer Ensim, we recommend to our customers to go to plesk server...
What we are thinking about doing is getting a server in our Dallas rack and putting FreeVSD on it.
I would be interested in splitting that up maybe 4 ways for trial and error.
Let me know if your interested.

Just found this identical plan:

:D
ispclub.com 10-24-2001, 12:44 AM That is because we just put it on the site today.
leeacm 10-29-2001, 06:17 PM Just out of interest, anyone looking at starting up their own "server co-operative" should read the stuff on the following site first,
http://www.crosswired.org.uk/cooperative/generalfaq.php
I found this while searching for something completely irrelivent, but thought it would do well on this post..
zagadka 10-30-2001, 05:16 AM who can offer
2mbit bandwith

and whats the price
klisis 10-30-2001, 10:21 PM Hmm, nice plan and price. I'd signup if I wasn't with Jag.
