View Full Version : What are other hosts using for e-mail?

What e-mail programs and/or techniques are some other web hosting companies using in a virtual host environment?

I am configuring our new Red Hat Linux Server, but have run into a slight dilemma. (I must admit, that I was aware of the problem before we bought the system, but I decided to face it when we got to it.) The default POP mail does not lend itself well to virtual domain hosting (bob@domain1.com and bob@domain2.com being the same mailbox). I am aware of some techniques, such as assigning a special name to each box, like user1, user2, etc. and setting up mail forwarders.

What do others recommend?

Best regards,

Sorry Frank,

can't think of anyting else. On a RedHat system, an email address has nothing to do with the username (unless of course you only have one domain on your server is which case all email defaults to that domain). As long as the username is unique, you can have any combination of email addresses.

A perfect example is my ISP. My email adress with them is fors@videotron.ca but my username to login and retrieve my email is vlitmxzy (or something abtract like that).

I wouldn't want to use a program that allowed duplicate usernames with different email addresses. Could you imagine how confusing, or how hard it would be to keep track of? Not to mention the security risks.

On my server I make the usernames very easy to remember (pick a format and stick to it) and let my clients decide what email addresses they want by adding aliases in their control panel. That way, the only thing I need to concern myself with is their usernames.

The only thing I can think of would be to use one of the many virtual pop hacks. Those of course depend on what software you use.

I just remembered that Linuxconf has a virtual pop ability. But that would require seperate ips per domain and reverse ip mapping.
