2 days of downtime is not acceptable ... Once the server is up, move your account to different webhost. Ask for refund if possible ....

cheers,

Hello,

2 days downtime is acceptable if the downtime is justified.

2 days downtime is acceptable if the downtime is justified.

And what justifies 2 days of downtime???? The only thing I can think of is destruction of a NOC maybe. There really is no other excuse.

Their carrier could be having problems which is out of there own control.

NOC having 2 days of problem? Then I will definitely move my server, ask for refund to my provider, and refund my clients' hosting fee!

Sure, but is it acceptable? Not in my opinion.

Their carrier could be having problems which is out of there own control. Contacting the client to explain WHY it is down is within their control....

Move your server? oh trust me when you have 200+ accounts on the server you wouldn't want to move anything. Also Deb i agree, they should've done that at least.

Why not? I did not say get another dedicated server and move the accounts from old to new server, did I? :) I said, move the server. I did once move my _colocated_ server (physically moving it to different NOC) from VDI to NAC. We did make some preparation for the DNS setting. There were about 60 sites hosted on it. It was down only for 60-90 minutes. But again, that's the beauty of colocation instead of renting a dedicated server :) More flexibility!

I might be wrong, but it seemed like this person merely has a virtual account, easily moved, and I would strongly consider moving it. Sure depends on the reason, but still, two days is a long time and I'd be freaking out by now.

Yes :D

I see what you mean dektong. I agree with you, but if the host is leasing server it is a huge task to take on for 2 days downtime.

As part of our continuing effort to improve our network operations, we were investigating different collocation facilities and network providers partners.

Our current provider disconnected our bandwidth prematurely without our knowledge. The disconnection occurred on October 9, 2001 – 7:00pm Eastern time.

Once we discovered that this was not a technical problem, we were at the mercy of our provider’s administrative offices who operate between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Mountain time. The servers, routers and data were unaffected.

Once the provider’s proper parties were identified, we worked in tandem with the administrative team to resolve the issue. The connection was restored at approximately 5:15pm Eastern time on October 10, 2001.

To reiterate, any downtime is unacceptable. We are accelerating our efforts to distribute our network operations, thus ensuring the reliability and “Red carpet” service that WebShowHost is known for.

Franklin, I am sorry to hear that. I think you are not to be held responsible in this case (although you would most likely have to compesate your clients). I hope your clients will understand your situation and you can work things out better. I like the fact that through this difficult situation you still admit that the downtime is not accepatbale and not trying to get excuses.

Cheers,

I fully agree with ummmm...Billy :)
The reason why some companies have a 2nd or 3rd or even a small backup noc is to keep things running while they fix the primary noc.

Dektong,
I am in charge of tech support at WebShowHost, and I just wanted to again reiterate that we firmly believe that ANY downtime is not acceptable, and that the very first thing we did(after service was restores) was post a statement to all our public sites (please see http://webshowhost.net ) that briefly explained the situation, and offered to compensate ALL our paying customers with a free month of service.

We have also been trying to reach all our customers by phone to communicate this to them.

We do appreciate your kind words, and vote of support. We have been working extremely hard to earn the trust and respect of all our customers, this is definitely a set back. We are doing all we can to insure that this situation does not happen again.
