View Full Version : EV1Server.net!
Hi,
I had a few questions about EV1Servers.net:
1. Are the servers managed?
2. If you are just hosting your ow nsite do you really have to do anything?
3. Anything else I should know.
Thanks
Cirtex 01-29-2004, 09:31 PM 1. No, they do help out a lot though, especially their forum is a great way to ask for help and to learn.
2. Yes
3. Check their site, look around, ask their sales team for info.
klisis 01-29-2004, 09:31 PM Ev1 is completely unmanaged. But they may provide a little degree of support.
You can also use their forum for How-To.
You have to do everything on your own, such as securing your server, installing rpms and the like.
eddy2099 01-29-2004, 09:49 PM You will need to have at least some basic knowledge on how to use the underlining operating system as you will have to do your own securing, updating and all that on the machine. The How-tos does help but it helps to know what you are doing.
Security is essential and that is one area which does not have that 'Set and Forget' benefits. It is a life-long commitment to ensure that your server is lock down and all patched up for as long as you have the machine. One lapse in that area could lead to your server being compromises and the only avenue at that stage would be to reformat your harddisk and start again.
If you are not comfortable handling all these work, you could always someone to do it for you. There are quite a few people lurking around whose whole business is revolved around helping people in server management for a fee.
Jay H 01-29-2004, 09:58 PM EV1 could improve on reboot times and their techs could use some grammar lessons, other than that - it's a good service they provide.
You'll need to be knowledgeable in server administration as, like the others have said above, their services are unmanaged. They can help you to a certain extent with troubleshooting - but don't expect them to babysit your server all day long. Take it from the quote..
"Please be patient, there are 18,000 servers we provide support to".
Disagree on reboot times. Compared to most providers in their range the times they perform reboots in are exceptional.
amusive.com 01-30-2004, 04:03 PM I waited almost half an hour for a reboot once (for the machine to be rebooted -- not for it to come up). That is not exceptional. It can be hit or miss, depending on how busy they are I guess.
FatalSw1tch 01-30-2004, 04:10 PM We had a problem with a server. They gave us a server that the harddrive and the motherboard had extreme problems. We went though the logs and finally they said it must be a hard ware problem so they said, they were going to set us up an Identical system.
Well they did ..... sorta. It was 300mhz slower and 512mb of ram short. But they keep fixing the problems that they have made.
Other then that the service is great in the whole year I have had servers with them. Next best thing to colocation :)
bonnmac 01-30-2004, 09:25 PM 1. No
2. Yes, you will need to know basic linux commands and how to secure your server.
3. Check their forums, many great how-to's there.
Every re-boot request I have ever put in has taken 5 minutes or less.

Jay H 01-31-2004, 12:38 AM Don't get me wrong, I've had some stellar reboot times with EV1, however, they could still improve in that area. But for the price and the service they provide - it's hard to beat. They are a good provider IMO.
Layer3 02-01-2004, 01:16 AM There reboot times for me are excellent. There support is not bad for being called unmanaged. Now that their IRC support is back the support is getting even better. Yes its unmanaged but if you talk to them like humans and not attack them right off the bat you will see that you can get almost managed support from them, well not really but pretty dam close :)

Well said. I think if you talk with them in a calm respectful manner they will do just about anything for you. I know because they have gone above & beyond un-managed services for us. But if your gonna be rude and yell at them all the time, then it might just take a little longer to get support.
Just remember one thing in life and it will take you far, "Treat others as you would like to be treated"

Amen!
airnine 02-05-2004, 04:41 PM I've been looking for a dedicated server.
It'a seems like EV1Servers.net are popular, still...
Would you put them high on your recommend list?
Are they appropriate for someone moving to a dedicated server for the first time?
Thanks,
Airnine
It all depends on what you plan to do with the server.
If you are going to host important sites and want good uptime then in no way you should make your move to unmanaged server provider unless you plan to hire a professional sysadmin which works out to cost the same or more than getting managed server.
Both of you seems to need a shared hosting account managed completely managed by hosting company or a managed server unless you just want to play with it or learn how to manage it.
If your able to manage they are great ,
i'm at Ev1 since 2 year now 4 server then still happy !
You have to know how to manage/admin yourself the server
or hire an admin btw !
I have almost 100% network uptime in 2 years
2 HD failure in that time.
All reboot i have submit have been +- 10min
Support is not bad but not perfect, you have to specify very well your ticket...
Still Happy, then waiting to get another server in couple of month on the new datacenter !
