View Full Version : What don't you like about Plesk?

I've demo'ed it a few times and so far I like it much more than H-Sphere or CPanel/WHM (my only other two control panel experiences... haven't used ensim yet). But as they say, the devil is in the details. I'm interested in opinions about its usability, administration, extensibility, code quality (if anyone knows), interoperability with billing systems, etc.

Also, I understand there's a Plesk product for managing multiple servers. Anyone have any experience with this?

My major gripe is the UI.. it's not the most user-friendly thing in the world, and I've had a few customers & friends agree.

Plesk is stable - but a little lacking on the features side

Wait until you see the new GUI in 7.0 and the new features. :) If you haven't seen the windows version yet, check it out at the Plesk site. They have a demo. 7.0 includes all that and more....

They heard everybody about the GUI. :)

Have they figured out a way to 'jail' accounts yet? If not...could care less if it's the most beautiful interface in the world. :)

Do you mean suspend accounts? That has been around since version six.

No he means make it so when cgi programs or shell runs the process is jailed within the home of the account and not in the root of the drive.

My biggest gripe with plesk is price, next biggest (used to be haven't used since 2.5) qmail, tracking spammers was HARD with it, especially since there's just one big queue and nothing is seperated by domain so you can quickly see where mail is coming from. This was a problem on 2.x but the newer versions could be better, at $640 per license I quit using plesk 2 years ago.

I use plesk for somewhat 2 year then think to change...

Plesk start to sell everyting apart..
You have to pay for language, tomcat etc..
And they have serious communication problem , they
apear to reply only email they wont then just skip those
they wont want to reply...

Then its look on plesk 7 that the new feature will be paying options again ... So i look in another option, i want to be ready then probably swap my plesk server this year... Actually the new
ensim released this month look great ??

The security benefits and stability in Plesk 6 far outway the lack of frills... IMHO

That's actually brings up another concern I have about most all the major CP's.. they seem to lure people into a false sense of security about their servers.

Panels can (far too easily) give people the idea that they they're more in touch with their system than they really are. Now don't get me wrong, in the hands of an experience sysadmin, panels are a great tool -- but in the hands of someone who woke up with the idea they wanted to start a hosting company this next weekend.. it's a scary thought, especially for that persons future customers.

Any shared hosting system inherits security risks, no matter the CP, but the stability in Plesk has proven to be more important, to me anyway, than the gimmicks and gadgets some of the other CP's supply.

What I dont _like_ is the GUI -> but I have seen now the psa 7.0 beta and this is great also now.

Lack of features maybe -> but not in 7 I would say.

The only thing I _HATE_ at plesk is their really st*pid, f*cking, not knowing what they are doing - PLESK SUPPORT (which is done via Russia). Honestly I will never again contact them for support issues...

The one thing Plesk doesn't state is the fact that if you purchase from a Reseller that reseller is required to support you.

There are a variety of resellers listed on there site and more that aren't. Many of the resellers listed on the site don't offer Plesk seperate from there own boxes.

If you want Plesk but don't want to deal with the support I recommend contacting a reseller.

You could search these forums or maybe google to locate one.

Hope this helps.

We've been testing DirectAdmin on RH 9 - it kicks the *** out of Plesk any day :)

I promised myself I wouldn't mention DA in this thread. But since you started it.

I am extremely pleased with DA and it kicks Plesk's butt in my opinion, and Ensim's too. I love the low overhead of DA.

Here's a test, just setup 500 dummy domains on Ensim, and restart apache, it takes minutes while it scrolls past. So far DA is very low impact, love that.
