View Full Version : HostRocket -- too good to be true?
dahamsta 01-29-2004, 01:05 PM A client wants me to move one of his sites to another location for redundancy, and he's got it into his head that Verio is the bees knees. His site will use about 15GB of transfer this month, so I went looking for something with about 20GB on Verio and the best price I could see was the equivalent of a dual xeon in rackshack. So I toddled around the (maddening) host review sites a little and came across a brand name I've heard of - HostRocket - which is at the other end of the spectrum at 14.95/month. Which seems a little too good to be true to me.
So my question is as per the title, but let me put it another way so I can point my client here and have you guys assuage his fears: How would HostRocket stack up against Verio?
[EDIT: And if the answer is "not brilliantly", are there any alternatives with a brandname I'll recognise that won't cost the earth?]
Thanks,
adam
PS. What's the deal with Interland these days? Phone orders only? Not very useful when if you wanted to buy Stateside hosting from Europe!
Hostrocket prices are something that normally, with a small host you'd be right to be cautious about, but they are very big, have been around along time and even operate their own facility, so in terms of them disapearing or suddenly shutting off the account for no valid reason, i think it's pretty safe to say it's not going to happen.
I don't have any first hand experience with HR but do have a friend with an account there, he says support is generally ok, usually quick but not all the time.
He's been there about 3-4 months and uptime has been pretty good as far as i can tell.
nettigritty 01-29-2004, 01:27 PM like Loon put it HR has been there for a while now. no personal experience but i know someone who's hosted there and is ok with their service. not ecstatic. ok.

And that right there is the power of branding! :D
HostRocket have been around for years. They run their own facility, and have staff on the premises. IMO, they'd be a pretty safe bet.

yea... if your looking for reliabilty, HR is pretty good.
Mark_TVI 01-29-2004, 03:24 PM Verio is top shelf, so is Rackspace and ServInt, all three of which offer shared hosting. Internap Hosts are also on a pretty dependable network. I would suggest a look at Fluidhosting, they use Internap and have a good reputation.
In determining the value of your web site, ask yourself if you are comfortable paying more for Mcdonalds dinner for two, than paying to host your web site for a month.

OOOOH...gonna steal that line..:)
dahamsta 01-29-2004, 06:02 PM Hi Watcher_TVI,
Verio is top shelf
Too rich for my blood. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place, but the best price I could find on their site for >= 20GB was ~$250/month. They might be top shelf, but that's loony toons money for a shared hosting plan in my view. I'd prefer .1% less uptime and a dual xeon, ta. :)
so is Rackspace and ServInt, all three of which offer shared hosting
Hasn't Rackspace always been a managed-dedicated provider? I've never seen shared hosting plans on their site and I can't see any now. Servints plans don't look too bad, although I have to confess a(n often misguided) reluctance to do business with companies with messy looking websites.
Internap Hosts are also on a pretty dependable network. I would suggest a look at Fluidhosting, they use Internap and have a good reputation.
Never heard of 'em, but the plans look ok.

I take your point, but to be fair I have been round the block. (Started in Hiway many many moons ago, running a few of my own machines now.) There's a difference between a McDonalds dinner for two and lunch at the Ritz, but I don't want to pay silly money just for a an uptime difference of 0.00001%. :)
Reason I asked is that HostRocket is a familiar name to me, and feedback here seems pretty positive. I'd expect to see a lot more bitching and complaining if their reliability is bad.
I appreciate the suggestions, and welcome more.

larrylefty 01-29-2004, 07:51 PM I just left hostrocket, they were ok, but suppot wasnt great.
Mark_TVI 01-29-2004, 08:11 PM ServInt has been providing services for 9 years now, they are a class operation and offer the best support I've ever experienced. Don't let their web site keep you from something as good as what they have to offer.
Email Rackspace and tell them what you want, I'm sure they will give you a quote. I can't recall ever seeing pricing on Rackspace's page before, but they have live support there 24/7. Ask an operator if you don't want to wait for an email.
Another high quality host to consider would be pair.com. They have also been in business for quite a while (8-10 years I think?).
Verio and HostRocket are in completely different markets. If you want something comparable to Verio, look into pair.com, hostingmatters.com, and futurequest.net. All have a proven track record and are reasonably priced.
Good luck!

We're in our ninth year, thanks for asking :)

iHPNOW 01-29-2004, 09:10 PM Sorry, incorrect info.
No, HostRocket owns RackFast. They have nothing to do with RackSpace.
iHPNOW 01-29-2004, 09:25 PM Oh, my fault, I got the two mixed up! VERY SORRY!

Kevin I knew it was around there so I covered all the bases...;)
dahamsta 01-30-2004, 08:20 AM Pair looks good. They might be in the same category when it comes to reliability, but by god they're not in the same category when it come to pricing. :)

FHDave 01-30-2004, 09:35 AM Ah I did not know that there is a pair representative here! :)
Just visited your site, you guys have an nicer site now :)
aingaran 01-30-2004, 10:51 AM Has anyone seen RackSpace commercials on TechTV? Damn...That was horrible!
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the hosts mentioned in this thread.
Usually, with the number of posts like this, there's a crappy host usually suggested by the "members"...surprisingly, all the suggestions are of reliable / reputable hosts....Then again, I guess it's the people who are making the suggestions.
