sorry i am pretty much new to dedicated hosting

i see that many dedicated hosting plans offer cpanel installation at an extra price of x dollars per month. But since you are allowed to install the cpanel yourself, cant you just not go for the installation, then install it yourself saving some money?

It generally would cost a lot more for an individual to get a license from CPanel directly than from a hosting firm that buys them bulk so in the end it would be more expensive.

CPanel costs tons of money, but it isn't like there's a good open source alternative
