View Full Version : How does buying / renting IP's work?

I was just wondering.. how do IP's work.. I mean I know what they are and what they do etc, but can I buy or rent them directly from Arin or a "reseller" of sorts? I ask because I'm looking into hosting my own sites at my home because I can get a 1Mb / s upstream DSL line for under $100 which, even nowhere near maxed out, could provide me with over 200GB of transfer / month. The catch is that they want $15 a month to rent an IP, otherwise it's fairly dynamic.. changes every great once in a while anyway. While were at it... I know you can point multiple IP's at the same box, but how does that work? Just a configuration issue? TIA for any help.

I think I _do_ have problems reading somebody's post :(

OK ... no objection if you are going to host your own sites!

In all fairness, you just want to host your own sites, correct? If so, you have a few options.

You can host many servers on just one IP using a router like a LinkSys or Netgear Cable/DSL router. At the moment, I am hosting two web servers on one IP via my home router. (for testing purposes only)

You can just use one server too. You can program Apache to do true virtual hosting. It will allow you to host multiple sites on one IP.

Hope this helps.

If you need a small number of IP's (ie less than thousands of them), you have to deal with your upstream provider (in your case the company that provides your dsl line), not ARIN. You pay them, they assign you one from the pool that they have. You're basically renting the use if that IP.

joe52 is correct. I'm sorry I didn't mention that before.
