View Full Version : Plesk vs. Ensim, pros and cons?
Runetek 01-29-2004, 08:24 AM Hello all,
what do you recommend? (see subject).
For web hosting purposes, resellers, etc...
Please, ignore cPanel.
Thank you!
Milka
Ronald_Craft 01-29-2004, 08:34 AM Stay away from ensim. It has more bugs then an ant hill.
Runetek 01-29-2004, 08:38 AM Thank you..
or any other proposals of professional panels? (except the cpanel)...
Helm looks good, but it seems like it's not for Linux.

Depends who you talk to ;)
What operating system are we talking about here?
Plesk and Ensim Pro are both crap on Windows, but they are both okay on Linux... Depends on what your after
Runetek 01-29-2004, 08:47 AM Linux only, of course :-)

Aushosts 01-29-2004, 08:50 AM Plesk listens to it's users - something lacking at Ensim Corp :)
eddy2099 01-29-2004, 09:19 AM What is the problem or bugs with Ensim Webppliance Pro ? I am using it on my Windows 2003 and never had any problems.. Maybe you could enlighten me.. so I know what I got myself into.
Ronald_Craft 01-29-2004, 09:34 AM If you try to set permissions with the file manager, it doesn't work. The changes don't propagate down to the entire directory. So, you have to login everytime and do it manually. If you set write permissions, and a user sets permissions in ensim..it'll reset the permissions so you'll have to reset them.
There's a bug where if you have a lot of sites hosted, eventually ensim will vomit errors and crash and you'll need to restart. We managed to find and fix this bug ourselves but the people at Ensim have yet to patch this.
When trying to setup SSL, don't bother using ensim. It does nothing.
There's no built in anti-spam at all. The new linux version is going to have anti-spam, but the Windows version is as crappy as ever with no new release planned anytime soon.
That's just some of my rants about Ensim for windows. By far the worst control panel I have used.
eddy2099 01-29-2004, 10:01 AM Thank God that I did not face the same problem as you with my Ensim for Windows. I installed SSL through it and worked like a charm. Did over 8 recently with no problem.
Ensim doesn't come with a Mail Server so the anti-spam thing is an issue of the mail server. I use Mail Enable Pro and it does have some checks for that.
Ronald_Craft 01-29-2004, 10:07 AM Yes, we have mail enable as well. It has a bannedphrases.txt, bannedaddresses.txt, etc.
Not exactly an efficient anti-spam. No matter how much you build up these .txt files spam is too randomized for you to keep up with it.
eddy2099 01-29-2004, 10:10 AM But what happens with Mail Enable has nothing to do with the Ensim as a control panel since Ensim doesn't come with a mail server naturally on the Windows environment.
Ronald_Craft 01-29-2004, 10:14 AM I didn't say it did. I was just implying that neither of them are any good. The fact that ensim doesn't have a mail server in it is a bad thing IMO. So, no integrated mail server, no built in anti-spam leads to problems.
NexDog 01-29-2004, 10:22 AM Plesk is amazing software and version 7 looks like it will have lots more goodies. The interface is just so goddam logical (unlike cpanel). After being in WHM for than 30 minutes, I get the DTs and have to login to Plesk to calm my nerves. :stickout:
cbtrussell 01-30-2004, 12:24 AM Well, I for one think Ensim Pro for Linux is a great tool. Could it be better? Sure it could. But so could Plesk (to be fair, Plesk was my second choice when picking a new platform last year). If Ensim would improve their GUI a little, it would really help! But as far as listening to users, I believe Ensim is doing a much better job. As of this week, the new 3.7Pro release has AV and Spam filtering built into the CP, with options configurable by site & user. The new Ensim release is also completely independent of your MySQL, Apache, PHP, etc. installation, so no more problems with trying to upgrade core components on your own. Definitely headed in the right direction!

PS - The new Plesk 7 interface for Windows is beautiful. Combine that with Ensim Pro 3.7 and we'd have a winner ;)
Dan L 01-30-2004, 04:47 PM Plesk itself is nice, but considering the cost vs. cPanel licensing, and the apparent lack of presales support, I declined for cPanel.
gilbert 01-30-2004, 07:32 PM I currently use plesk on a dedicated server. I made the descion like you are doing cause server4you was only offer on or the other. Took plesk because people said some fairly good stuff about it. I have had no problems about it / or with it just yet at all.
StoneHalo 01-30-2004, 08:31 PM Just got Plesk7 beta installed, WOW! What an improvement, it looks great! Lots of new goodies :D
NexDog 01-30-2004, 08:32 PM How did you get it?
StoneHalo 01-30-2004, 08:34 PM http://forum.plesk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12142
Emailed them yesterday, got it today :)
NexDog 01-30-2004, 08:45 PM Emailed Todd - thanks!

Are you talking Linux or Windows?

Another vote for Ensim Pro. So, how long you think its going to be before resellers/hosters start offereing Ensim Pro 3.7?

I can say personally, that we are testing Ensim Pro 3.7 right now -- it is being run on a testing server, making sure it's stable and secure enough to run out on the production machines. My guess is that we will be offering Ensim Pro 3.7 hosting within 2 weeks (unless some bug fixes take a little longer).
I'm sure most others will not me migrating soon -- as it means installing a new OS.
cbtrussell 02-01-2004, 10:52 AM I've got three boxes ready to go into production with 3.7 on them. We'll probably start offering it to customers in a week or two.
