View Full Version : Any other TiVo fans here?
bodypainter 01-28-2004, 02:29 PM I got my first TiVo, a Sony standalone, in July 2001 and now have a pair of Hughes DirecTiVo boxes. For my money and as a person who doesn't watch very much television, this is the best invention of the 21st Century so far (okay, maybe a tie with the iPod).
I was just wondering if there's any other TiVo users on board here. For a long long time it was like no one had ever heard of TiVo except me but in the last year or so I've been seeing more and more mention of it on other shows, the press, etc and people are starting to ask me about mine.
It's just a damn shame that it's so hard to describe to someone just *why* the TiVo is such a cool gizmo. You just have to live with one for a short while to understand but then you can never go back.
hostpath.com 01-28-2004, 02:32 PM I have DirecTivo and it's absolutely incredible. Before I got it I had folks who were Tivo users telling me how great it is -- but until you try it, you have no idea just HOW great it is!
nickn 01-28-2004, 02:42 PM I have ReplayTV and live by it. I've used TiVo (with DirecTV dual band) before and it was nice as well..
amusive.com 01-28-2004, 03:15 PM I have a Tivo dual-tuner DirecTV model and also a ReplayTV.
Tivo is so freaking awesome. Espeically with two tuners... it melts in your mouth, not in your hand. And I don't even know what that means.
ReplayTV is okay... I got it rather cheap with lifetime service, and it's nice if you don't have DirecTV... but it's lacking. It's far less user friendly, bit more confusing... not easy to see what conflicts with what, or why something isn't recording.
One huge advantage is you can skip commercials automatically (kind of sucks on some networks, doesn't work very well). Another is that you can download shows to your computer really easily.
Fortunately, on the 2nd one, tivo is going to release software to do that ;)
Rich2k 01-28-2004, 03:20 PM Absolutely... couldn't live without my TiVo... or should I say I couldn't cope with having to live with TV schedules again
ilyash 01-28-2004, 03:53 PM if you have a tivo..
try the hacking tivo thing..
a buddy of mine did it..
he put *nix on it [special distro]
and had it accesable from the web
so you can watch the movies/shows from comp
KIA-Joe 01-28-2004, 03:56 PM Got my Tivo back in December. I don't know how I lived without. It makes TV watching the way it should be. On demand and without commercials!
I'm gonna love it for the Super Bowl ... so I can have my own Instant Replay!

I never figured out why anyone would want to do that. Let's see, should I watch this movie on my 35" television or my 17" monitor? Can't decide....
It would be useful to mod the system for video extraction so as to burn shows to DVD but I'm just not motivated to go to the trouble quite yet.
What I want is to be able to watch a show on either TiVo on the other TiVo. The standalone crowd has the HMO option now to do this but no love for us DirecTiVo users yet in that department.
I did replace the hard drive in my living room TiVo to bump it up to 100 hours of recording time.

TiVO has always ran Linux direct from the factory. Although there is seriously about a million different things you can do to the TiVo if you know how, I somehow highly doubt he changed the system to a "special distro". First of all there would be no real point in doing so, and second of all it likely would break the TiVo from even operating. You can do just about anything to the TiVo with the stock Linux kernel on it, so doing so just seems pointless. I have dual 120gb HD's, a wireless nic card, and many custom mods done to my dual tuner DirecTV Tivo unit. Pretty awesome all the things you can do.

Vox Hosting 01-29-2004, 02:37 AM I have an ATI All In Wonder hooked up to the cable and the All In Wonder hooked up to the TV. Works pretty good.
2Grumpy 01-29-2004, 03:59 AM I got a Tivo a while back and absolutely love it, definitely one of those "gotta have" things once you have one you don't see how you did without it.
ericabiz 01-29-2004, 06:02 AM Tivo!! :D
I've had my Tivo (SAT-T60 DirecTV) for several years now. I would never go back to watching "regular" TV!
Rich2k 01-29-2004, 07:00 AM I don't know what I would do if my TiVo broke (TiVo isn't available to buy as new in the UK now :( )
