Are there any real advantages to having a static IP for a domain rather than a virtual one? I've heard things like how it improves search engine indexing and some other conjectures.

Thanks,

Yea. Your IP doesn't change so people can actually find your site. You'd have to setup one of those DNS untilities to have blah.no-ip.com

Well if you need to secure it with an ssl cert., or offer anonymous ftp,,, your gonna need one. Don't believe all the "hype" on SE though, IMO.

Thanks. Don't need SSL, and I don't really believe either the theory on search engines.

Nah, the IP address is not import for the search engines.. It is your domain name which is important and when you move, your domain name follows you but not the ip address.

a dedicated ip is only good for SSL as far as i can see. what's the point of going through all the hassel of having a DNS system if you're going to rely on your ip?

The only reason you'd need a static IP is for SSL or if you're serving anything from a dynamic IP (webcam images, FTP site, etc).
