View Full Version : Tera-Byte
Fiber 10-02-2000, 05:08 PM I was curious to how everything is at Tera-Byte right now? Seems as I may sign up with them, and I was curious to how they are.
Also, I noticed that they now use RaQ4's. Does anyone have any reasoning to believe that they did? Any downtime, while they did do it?
Thanks a bunch :)
kunal 10-02-2000, 05:19 PM Tera-Byte's uptime is excellent. There support is quick, and they are cheap. What more can one ask for? ;)
They do use RaQ's now. I dunno why though. :(
-Edward- 10-02-2000, 06:13 PM RAQ's are cheap and reliable so i guess thats why they use them. They are very stable and do excute cgi scripts fairly well. Have not had any problems so far with the ones i use.
There uptime is excellent. Support is fast and polite. Nice and cheap the way i like it :-).
cbaker17 10-02-2000, 07:20 PM Their great for a beginner, but they dont execute cgi's well, they have limited processing ability which is what cgi's need. But the Raq4 does do a better job.

Still fine as fine as when I recommended them to you last (sign up already! :)). They *now* use RaQ4's but as far as down time, they didn't pull everyone off the RAQ3's they have I'm sure. It is just that if you sign up now, you'll be put on the newer server.

I hear this alot, but what about that UBB running on a RaQ3 that pushes 100gigs/mo? I think they might not top out as high as some people like, but saying they don't execute cgi's well?? Put 512MB of ram in it and it does fine. Not as good as a PIII 800, but it isn't a PIII 800, that's a given.
I'm going to back Chicken on that one.
You can't compare a Raq straight across to an Intel or AMD rig unless they have the same specs.
E.g. 300mhz or 400mhz cpu
webfors 10-02-2000, 11:11 PM I agree with Chicken. You can't expect an AMD K6-2 300mhz processor to compare to a PIII.
It all depends how much they load their servers. If they put 300 clients who use moderate to heavy cgi on a RAQ3, well, ever watch molasses poor out of a jar?
Tera-byte has an excellent reputation so far, so I'm sure they like to keep their customers happy, therefore I doubt they would load them down like that.
Now, the older RAQ2's, well that's a whole different animal! :)
I have my site hosted by Chicken and, I've found the network performance to be very good.
cbaker17 10-03-2000, 01:32 AM Regardless of how much ram is on it, processor power is limited and stabability is decreased. In addition a Intel system is cheaper. So what am I getting at. If your a beginner and need a dedicated hosting server get cobalt, if your not stay away from them. You can get a cheaper and better solution from a different hardware platform.
theNonsuch 10-03-2000, 11:55 PM Well...
I've been with Tera-Byte for just over a week, so it's much too early for pronouncements on their service quality... I must say, though, that I was highly skeptical of their prices and services. Really, it just seems too good to be true.
I'm setting up one of those godforsaken "Vanity sites", so I wanted a cheap, realiable host... so I figured why not. Does anyone know how long they've been around for, and has anyone been with them for over a year?
I recognize that these folks are the same people behind the free Web host SpacePorts... which of course makes me wonder just what kind of revenue stream they see. The free internet services industry is just going <sarcasm>so well</sarcasm>, after all...
Thanks,
Neil
