View Full Version : Price per GB bandwidth
WHRKit 01-24-2004, 03:34 PM I am currently working on a study about the web hosting industry. Can you guys tell me what the average price per 1 GB bandwidth per month for the average web host is?
Is $0.75 an accurate number?
Thanks.
Pheaton 01-24-2004, 03:35 PM we charge between $0.60 and $0.75.
Cost per mbit (330GB) can be from $30-$35/mo on Cognet -> $80/mo on others.

WHRKit 01-24-2004, 03:45 PM Thanks for the quick response. :) This will help a lot.
Aboul_YouseF 01-24-2004, 04:09 PM I have seen hosts who price bandwidth @ $0.2/eXtra GB/Mo.
And for some reason, i am not willing to shout out company names right here, if you are curious to know , them email me at: contact@uaeturbo.com
othellotech 01-24-2004, 04:12 PM £1/Gb ($1.80)
on average we see appx 195Gb/transferred for every 1Mb/s of transit
1Mb/s costing circa £120
DynamicHost 01-24-2004, 04:30 PM Our cost is also in the $1.00 - $1.50 / GB range, it all depends on the providers.

AH-Tina 01-24-2004, 08:51 PM $1 per GB, almost exactly.
Knogle 01-24-2004, 09:25 PM I would charge $1.50-$2/GB if you're catering to the high end market.
demonmoo 01-25-2004, 01:35 PM It all depends .
I have seen places going $2USD per gb (some even do $5) .
Then again if you are the host buying bandwith (based on per GB transfered not MB 95% or anything like that) then you can see from $0.1 (crudge) to $2 resonably (all depends on the quality of the bandwith).
$0.75 isnt unrealastic (depending on what it is you are looking for).
Mark_TVI 01-25-2004, 03:44 PM As some people already mentioned it does depend on the provider.
What I would caution you about is using what a web host charges for a gig of bandwidth as opposed to what it actually costs them. Many hosts oversell their bandwidth to the point that their plans reflect ridiculous costs per gig. Some hosts don't even know what their bandwidth costs them in the first place, they depend on cash flow to make up for their pricing scheme deficiencies.
By looking at the upstream provider's costs for bandwidth you would be able to obtain a much more realistic range of costs.
depends what you're doing a study on, the web hosting business: buying services, or the webhosting business: providing the service.
2 different topics! Providing the service 25C per gig, buying the service, 50C per gig.

Rusty500 01-26-2004, 01:32 AM The initial per-GB cost can be very low (certain dedicated / colo providers will give you 1,000GB for $99/month). Of course there's usually a ton of overselling when these prices are offered.
I concur though, when it comes to overage, average price per GB is probably $1-$2.

VenturesHS 01-26-2004, 09:20 PM I would say $1 US per GB.
phpcoder 01-26-2004, 10:18 PM Wholesale price - It depends on how large your network is and what your carriers are.
Retail price - $1.00 - $5.00 (most within $1.00 - $2.00)
webephex 01-26-2004, 10:54 PM i would say the average hosting company owns a dedicated server and are getting 1000GB of bandwidth for ~ $100
an average hosting plan may be:
10GB bandwidth + 1,000MB disk space for $5 ( .50 bandwidth )
elancehostin 01-26-2004, 11:47 PM .12 a gig here
