View Full Version : Any feed back about Dual AMD servers.
Dual 1.2MP 100% more powerfull, Costs around $450-700 more than Dual PIII 1000 with similar configuration. But some claim that it's even more pwerfull than a much more expensive Dual Xeon(Foster) 1.7.

My new partener tried to get it from his host www.sitegenie.com .
But the host didn't recomend it, claiming it is not stable enough.
Any body tried it ?
Paul L. 10-08-2001, 05:51 AM They are not stable at all. We have 2 in non production, one runs fine never missed a lick the other dies after being in the rack for 1 day for no reason what so ever, the server had never even been logged in to.
I talked to our vendor and they said this is problems that they have been facing for some time now and that they would wait till things got more stable to put one in production.
NORRITT 10-08-2001, 05:55 AM Paul, are you talking about the new Athlon MP processor or the "normal" one?
Paul L. 10-08-2001, 06:50 AM Yes I am talking about the Dual 1.2MP
From what I am told they are getting only about one good CPU chip out of every four and there are still some motherboard issues.
It took 2 weeks of going thru parts to get the one going that died for no reason and it was burned in for a week by the vendor. I pluged it in at the office it run fine for a day there then took it to the NOC and put it in the rack thinking I will get to it the next day only to find it dead when I woke up :(
NORRITT 10-08-2001, 06:55 AM disappointing :( , especially because of that great speed:

AnandTech is using Athlon MP systems for their databases. they write it is performing pretty well
Paul L. 10-08-2001, 07:01 AM Well we have one thats running good so if you get a good one I guess you wont have problems,, but they are not very stable yet from what I have seen and been told.
eva2000 10-08-2001, 08:27 AM :( was hoping these dual Athlon MPs would be nice like the ones at www.appro.com

delemtri 10-08-2001, 11:19 AM Hmm, I ordered a Dual 1.2GHz AMD computer with 1GB of RAM and 2 40GB hard disks. It was $1475...
NORRITT 10-08-2001, 11:22 AM where?
delemtri 10-08-2001, 11:54 AM From my future colocation provider, totalhost.cc. :)
RackMy.com 10-08-2001, 12:05 PM Are you doing "Collation" with them? :)
(look at their homepage where they list their services)
dherman76 10-08-2001, 12:06 PM We use a dual AMD 1.2ghz for TerminalX and it runs unbelievable. So far, no problems. :) (Knock on wood) It is extremely powerful and an absolutely incredible server. It beats any P3 i have seen.

Tim Greer 10-09-2001, 06:00 AM Nice! So, the question is, who's going to send me one of these puppies?
The dual Pentium P4 1.8 GHZ (or was is 1.6?) is going to be out soon and it's supposed to be nice. I have no idea about the price though.

I am an AMD fan since the days of their 486 DX40 and I am definitly gone get 1-2 of these babies colocated ASAP.
Most likely from www.qsol.com
Tim_Greer,
They are already here, PIV Xeon CPU's running on Intel 860 chipset.
dherman76 10-09-2001, 12:21 PM We order from RackSaver.com
KDAWebServices 10-09-2001, 06:06 PM Anyone looking at Dual Athlons wants to look at Dual Tualtin 1.26Ghz Server chips - they have 512k of cache and they are seriously fast. Ok so they are not incredibly cheap, but in the end it works out cheaper than an equivelant Dual Athlon system, plus Intel is tried and tested with Dual CPUs.
For a home computer I'd have Dual Athlons, but for a server I'd still have dual intels at the moment.
Tetraboy 10-09-2001, 07:15 PM www.penguincomputing.com also has them ( with a configuator that gives prices. )

i've only seen they available at www.dell.com and www.aberdeeninc.com but 3 yr versus 1 yr warranty from the respective vendors

KDAWebServices 10-10-2001, 05:49 AM Trust me, you can build a Dual Tualtin for less than $3k, built with quality components, not cheap crap. Take a look at AcmeMicro.com

Any reviwes for the Dual Tualtin 1.26Ghz Server ,
The only plus for this chip is its L2 cache which is 512k, compared to the 256k on the Xeon(Foster) 1.7. But, the Xeon runs faster in and out and has a better core and much bigger memory bandwidth. So, I don't forsee a performance champ here.

Take a look at AcmeMicro.com WOW AcmeMicros site took ages to load for the configurator but the price is nice same system above but with 4 x Kingston 1GB SDRAM PC133 and 2 x IBM 36.4 GB 10k scsi US$3219 !
do you buy from them ?
as to reviews check out www.2cpu.com
KDAWebServices 10-10-2001, 07:34 AM Yep, we buy from them for all of our kit. I think they charge $30 to assemble all your server bits, and the build quality is excellant so I'm told (Seen as I'm in the UK I've never seen the server, but people in the NOC have).
Take a look at http://anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1509 for a review of the Tualtin.
eva2000 10-18-2001, 01:43 PM what about dual AMD Athlon 1500 - 1800MPs ?
http://www.einux.com/PRAMDMP101501.html
anyone gonna try one ? :)
AcuNett 12-07-2002, 11:45 AM How much power do you guys think a 2u Dual P3 1.13Ghz Tualatin with a 36GB 10k SCSI will need?
built myself a dual Zeon 2.8 with 1Gig PC2100 and 240GB HD....
4U
for $1880 - (ฃ1200) (All ext VAT)
SrvOutsource 12-08-2002, 12:22 PM We offer, and have several Dual AMD Athlon MP servers running with a varity of CPU's (1.2 -> 1.5GHz).
Never had a complaint with any of them.
But you do have to know which Dual AMD MP motherboard is good.
The MSI Dual AMD was there first attempt, and is not that stable.
Gigabyte came out with one awhile ago, but we have not tried/tested it.
Tyan has several versions/models out.
Some are good, and some are bad, like the early ones.
The other thing you have to watch is temp.
Even though Tyan claims it can be put into a 1U/2U, it WILL overheat.
Dual AMD MP's need ALOT of airflow, just as there old Athlon's did before they came out with the XP series.
I would also recommend to purchase retail CPU's, NOT OEM.
That come from an authorized supplier, listed on AMD's site.
Just my 2 cents. :)
