View Full Version : Computer Stuck
Hi,
I recently purchased a computer and installed the following things:
Virus Scan
Video Card Driver
Sound Card Driver
Windows 98 Second Edition
and maybe some more things.....
But whenever I load my computer up it gets stuck at the windows 98 screen. Anyone have a clue on how to fix it?
Thanks
Tazzman 01-23-2004, 09:03 PM Have you checked/visually inspected the hardware and cables?
Have you tried booting from the windows CD/booting in safe mode?

XP really isn't the answer for everything.
First, we need to know the computer's specs. This guy might of bought a used computer. Anything under 1ghz I wouldn't waste their time putting xp on it. Not to mention if it doesn't have 256 RAM....
csparks 01-23-2004, 10:37 PM 256 RAM....
Try 512Mb RAM! You will not even begin to experince the benefits of XP without 512Mb. If you do not have 512Mb RAM, I would go with win2000 SP 2.

I said at least, xp still blows
2k Proff all the way. :D
Neo3Net 01-24-2004, 01:39 AM I've recently upgraded a Win95 computer at 400Mhz 32Mb RAM to WinXP with 128Mb RAM and it runs smooth without errors. :) I also have a computer here with 256Mb RAM and it runs XP without a problem. I can barely tell the difference when running my other computer which has WinXP and 512Mb RAM. So biovelocity, idk what your talking about...
Now regarding your problem. I've had this problem before. It might be a problem with Virus Scan. What happens is, Virus Scan starts at boot and tries to scan the system but it wants some type of input from the user, the problem is you can't select "ok" or "cancel" because its running in the background. Try starting up in Safe Mode and disabling the Virus Scan software. (Tap F8 Repeatedly while the computer is loading to get into safe mode, it might be different on your computer depending on what model or BIOS version it uses)
Thats not it I deleted the virusscan.

Found the problem it was some software program I downloaded.
Thanks for the help.
csparks 01-24-2004, 05:32 AM neo3net:
I ran XP with 256Mb RAM, had not problems, but when you compare performance between running a computer with 256 on xp and win2000, win2000 wins hands down. At higher RAM amounts, XP manages it much better.
selake72 01-24-2004, 05:33 AM I tried running XP on a laptop with 450MHz processor and 160MB RAM, and it was so slow. Win 2000 Pro runs much better.
ChrisTech 01-24-2004, 10:46 AM I run on a 750Mhz Athlon processor & 256 RAM w/ XP home @ work, for tech support, and that box blows. It was just freshly loaded 3 weeks ago, and still same issues it had before.
IE will 'lock up & crash' if I have more than 4 IE windows open at once. And when it crashes, well crap, it might as well take the whole thing down, it just basically freezes the pc, then a screen pops up about 10 min later, saying IE crashed, do u want to send in your error report. Had it BSOD'ed I could of rebooted faster...
Bunch of other small errors with other programs, espcially secureCRT 4
Neo3Net 01-24-2004, 12:04 PM You guys also got to remember that XP has a very resource intensive default installation. If you remove all the extra visual effects and all the pretty crap, it really is a great machine. A friend of mine recently upgraded from XP to Microsoft Server 2003 (Which I thought was weird), but he said with a little tweaking Server 2003 was an amazing workstation PC and the performance and stability boost from XP was unbeleivable.

skyxliner 01-24-2004, 03:59 PM beware of some antivirus such as kasperskylab. they are awesome and perhaps the best antivirus there is but their antivirus monitor will freeze your whole computer. there are some ways to disable it. also next time try to list all ur computer specs first.
skyxliner 01-24-2004, 04:00 PM i have a intel 2.4ghz with 512 ddr hehe =D
i haven't received blue screen ever on xp
just a few freezing and error messages hehe
rusko 01-25-2004, 06:26 AM install slackware + X + kde. problem solved.

Thanks
I'm running XP with 128 MB of RAM and it works perfectly fine here.
ChrisTech 01-25-2004, 11:43 PM Did the original poster ever respond with the box stats, or is everyone going on how cool their xp box is? =P
ChrisTech 01-26-2004, 12:07 AM kjmz,
why dont you post your computer specs, so we know what you are workign with?
Windows 98 Second Edition
15GB Hard Drive
Pentium 3 733mhz
Video Card
Sound Card
128MB of Ram
DVD ReWriter
Can't think of anything else at the moment.
MGCJerry 01-26-2004, 12:35 AM Sorry to hijack this thread, but I hate XP. Worst computer experience I ever had. I'd install Win95a before willingly installing XP. Only had it installed 27 hours before running fdisk, and format commands on the HD from a special "DOS" disk of mine. :dgrin:
I like Win2k, but lately its been acting up, but I believe it was a memory issue and so far its been running nice since I made a couple changes. Some of my other silly Win2k software issues seem to arise from whenever I install Service Packs.
Just asking nicely could you make a new forum about this so you don't have to steal mine?
I have PII 333mhz with 192mb running xp pro :)
just make sure you have at least 128mb...I ran with 64mb and it was horrible. at least p2 cpu should be ok
