View Full Version : hosting mp3s !
Cyrus 10-06-2001, 02:54 PM can anyone tell me which host is best for hosting mp3s.
So that :-
1 ) They dont get removed
2 ) I can use the extension mp3 on them
3 ) Bandwidth is ( obviously ) not a problem
Hope to hear lots on this
thank you
Relyc 10-06-2001, 03:13 PM Well, many hosts will not allow mp3 sites simply because they use up so much of the alloted transfer, and potentially use up a lot of server resources.
If you are really intent on creating a large and popular mp3 site, you would probably be better off looking for a dedicated solution.
If you don't have the money for a dedicated server, and would prefer a shared solution, then you should try and figure out approx. how much bandwidth (transfer you need) and and half of that to the number (just to be safe)
I don't know specifically which hosts to recommend, but working out the above information should help you with your search.
Good luck ;)
Rewdog 10-06-2001, 03:13 PM Most hosts (every one I know of that isn't a scam) hate mp3 sites. If you have enough money, I'd say go with your own dedicated server.
Rewdog 10-06-2001, 03:16 PM lol, sorry for the repeating what relyc said, we posted at the same time :D
Cyrus 10-06-2001, 03:29 PM hehe, np :)
so I guess dedicated should be the way forward.!
But which deicated host to you suggest for mp3s ? can they take off mp3 files on a dedicated?
Basically, whats special about dedicated which will enable me to let users download mp3s ?
Thanks so far peeps !
Rewdog 10-06-2001, 03:39 PM On many dedicated servers, you have complete control over what you put on your server, though some dedicated hosts will have some guidlines like no hate sites, child porno, ect.
Or, you could buy your own server and colocate, and then no one can monitor your content but maybe the datacenter. (Am I mistaken?)
Burst.net
Site5.com
efreeservers.com
Search the boards about these, or ask questions in the dedicated forum. I have had no personal experience with any of them.
One thing you guys forgot was that its illegal to host an mp3 site, where you can download the material. All Data Centers in the United States will NOT let you HOST/Colocate or have illegal MP3 files in the host's building. They could get shut down or their bandwidth lines cut by the Government. Its called copyright infringement...it sucks i know, but its the law.
Look at what happened to Napster....they had their own servers and everything!

I think everyone is assuming they are legal mp3s.

Well, I would hope that a company would only remove illegal MP3's, but as I remember, most hosts delete all .mp3 file extenstions.

Rewdog 10-06-2001, 08:59 PM JIMB, thats why he should go dedicated, so they can't monitor the mp3s. And yes, the mp3s we are assuming are LEGAL. Just look at mp3.com........
Chicken 10-06-2001, 11:28 PM Mp3.com had their own troubles of late, but has made arrangements with various companies to distribute files. Really, 'legal to distribute' or 'right to distribute' is what matters.
Cyrus 10-07-2001, 04:57 AM hmm
I was hoping to put up top 20's of charts, but then they will be illgegal right ?
what IF, I put in letters BIG RED BOLD saying that files should be deleted after 24 hours ? Would that be ok ?

Still illegal, and very few, if any, legit companies will provide you with space / servers to host illegal .mp3's from.

illegal is illegal - if for one second or a year.

It's even illegal to think about it
Cyrus 10-07-2001, 08:59 AM come on
if it was THAT bad, there wouldnt be any mp3s on the net anywhere, and sites like mp3sound.com and ostlover.com would have gone ages ago
Im still having trouble finding hosts that allow mp3s, anyone know of any specific ones ?
thanks
If you really want to have a company that will allow you to host mp3 files on their servers, you have to go with a company that is outside the United States, and has their servers located outside the United States. Go with someone that has servers in like Antartica or something.

Well, it is the same theory that it isn't illegal to speed because everyone else does it. Not a solid defense in a court of law I'll tell you.
The good news:
There are some artists who promote their music via the internet. Instead of listing the top 20 songs that people have already heard, that you are not allowed to distribute, consider linking to all of the legal mp3's that many artists put on the net for download. Also, while I enjoy hearing the things on the radio, it might be nice to hear some other talented people who don't have their songs on the radio (yet), and expose epopel to some good alternative music that they can't find any where else.
