I can't find any noticable differences between the two. Would you suggest spending an extra $50 for it?
Note: Don't make fun of me because I am asking about Windows. Its for a neighbor

Apparently you can control an XP pro machine remotely... I know there's some others but I can't remember :-/

The professional comes with IIS5 which is great if you are doing web development for the it and need to test it locally.
Basically, there are some more 'professional' features as listed in http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp for the Pro.
There is more controllability over the system itself, some networking extras and a few others that "home" users wouldn't use.
I got the professional because it was only five dollars more then the home edition.

As far as I know:
-Encryption and Administrative Tools
-Able to connect to large networks
-Basically I think of it like comparing Windows ME to Windows 2000.
So XP is better ;)

Home is more user friendly and more automatic. If your neighbor just wants to surf and be able to send photos with e-mail, stuff like that, he'll be happier with Home version.

pro allows you to join a domain (microsoft definition), whereas home only allows you to join a workgroup. this is the primary distinction - one used to force larger companies to buy pro (large companies can not walk away from their ads infrastructure).

I certainly wouldn't have said that.

errr to be honest m8 you haven't said a lot, its obvious you prefer pro to home but could you give your reasons?
i just got a computer with home installed and would like a comparison for the layman to understand, from what i can gather unless i have a large network or company with lots of computers home would do perfectly?
