Hey,

I needed a 1 gig upgrade on my ram. There charging me an extra $30 to the $130 i'm paying now. Am I being overcharged for the RAM upgrade.

My other choice was to send them the ram. But then if it goes on me, I have to send them a replacement to have them fix it.

$30? Too rich for my blood. Well, you can get ram for pretty cheap. Check newegg, Crucial is pretty good, they might even have a life warrenty. If you wanna go really high end, you could check out OCZ, Kingston, or Corsair.

On a side note, I picked up 2 512 sticks of DDR 400 off the Anandtech sales forums for $80 USD a pop. They're Kingston HyperX, work in DCDDR perfectly, plus have a lifetime warrenty :) Sure its second hand, but hey, if they blow, i get new sticks for nothing :)

$30/month is about average from what I've seen for 1 GB additional RAM.

Alright. Yea i'm not gonna throw a fit about it. I just was not to sure rather I am being riped or not. I've heard some from both side.

Thanks

Just wondering why dedicated server companies do charge a recurring monthly fee for RAM?

I personally don't see the logic behind it, as such the hosting company has a single outlay for the memory (power consumption, HVAC etc.. is negligible on memory)?

It would be understandable on a Hard Disk for example, as that takes more juice, produces a lot more heat that needs to be extracted etc...

$30/month for an upgrade to 1GB is NOT a rip.

Schumie - there are very valid reasons for recurring charges - do a search as they have been discussed before.

If $30 makes a differance to someone with a dedicated server, they shouldnt even be considering renting a dedicated server.

They charge a recurring fee so they can stay in business. When you rent a server with gobs of bandwidth for basically pennies a month, the server company has to make up the difference somewhere. That difference is usually made up with recurring charges for RAM and HDD upgrades. Perfectly understandable from a business perspective.

There are a lot of reasons, let's look at it this way, a 1 GIG Chip will run about 180 - 310, now, most companies give a certain warranty with that. What happens when that ram goes bad outside of the warranty? Who pays for it? Needless to say the primary responsibility will be the hosting company so they have to cover their costs in that. Keep in mind, with each upgrade you do to your system it will ultimately allow you to use more system resources on a server that is not yours, so you have to take into account the following:

1. Wear and tear (albeit small)
2. Warranty
3. Support

So for example, let’s say you pay $200 for a memory upgrade, once shot deal, in 4 months something happens and the memory goes bad, when they say to you it will cost you $200 for the additional memory are you going to pay it or be angry at the hosting company. I think $30.00 a month for a 1 GIG upgrade is very reasonable and probably it’s probably safe to say that just about every dedicated hosting company charges a monthly fee for memory.

Another good example, by you adding that additional memory you have greatly enhanced the power of your server and can now host much more on it. Thus, you are going to increase your revenue on that machine, is it not fair that the hosting company make something as well…

Any hosting company is out to make money and the up sell is one of the greatest ways to do that...

Not trying to start any arguments, but I hope this sheds some light on it…

Yip, I am getting charge $350 for 1 gb Ecc compliant ram. I thought it was a lot but I guess you have to take into account the type of ram and what not. Must be different stuff than you get for your home pc?

Thats a fixed payment no monthly.

Its the same thing with an extra hd. They want you to pay per month on it. I'd rather just pay for it upfront, even its if overcharge for the drive. (ie. $280 for a 200 gig drive rather than $50 extra per month for it)
