View Full Version : Internet Explorer Error

Anytime I type:

domain.com/anything.anyextension

IE comes up with this error:

Cannot find ''. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.

This does not happen when WWW is typed in. I installed the new version of NetZero when my cable was out the other day, and may have botched something when removing the search page & things from the registry that NZ added. This does not happen when no extension is typed for some reason, but as long as the . is there or there's an extension, it will give that error. Any thoughts?

Yep. Mine does it too. I never noticed it before though.

Mine has never done it before though, so it can't be a bug for everybody - there's got to be some sort of easy fix in the registry for this one (I hope).

IE is pretty pants, but I just tried it and I don't get a problem :)
Although I haven't applied any patches or updates to IE for the last year or two (because I don't use it) - MS probably broke something with one of their updates :)

No, I didn't update anything...

Mozilla has an option in it where you can turn the "automatic inserting" of the "www" on and off, I don't use IE so it might have that option as well somewhere..

It's not that, since the domains work with or without www. It's just when there's a file with an extension at the end - that's only when the problem occurs.

I typed in site.com/file.ext that links to a real website, and it takes me there? (IE 6.0)

Works for me too..

The only time I have this problem is when a domain does not autoresolve the www. before the domain name. I hate it when that happens. Cant understand why anyone would do it but they still do.

IE 6.0 Windoze XP Pro

I had this problem too, which is one of the reasons I switched to Firebird.

If you do not specify a protocol (ie. http://), Windows Explorer/IE attempts to load local files. It's really dumb. Just switch to Firebird, you'll be happy you did :).

Any idea on how to fix this? The first thing that I checked was to make sure that I didn't have any local folders with the same name, since that's happened before. I still need to use IE though for some things, and don't want to switch browsers at this time.

I KNEW IT!

I saw the thread title, and I was sure that you posted, or would post a reply like that!

BAHHHHH!!! :stickout:

Maybe this has something to do with the fact that IE doesn't even read extentions the right way, but tries to guess them?

Anyway, works fine for me in firebird... and I just tried it in IE and it worked there as well.

Thats wierd!!!!!!

I am doing some experimenting with some things right now....

OK,i hae a favorite thats .LNK and not .URL,my desktop favorite list WILL NOT SHOW THE .LNK FAVORITE!!! It hides it!!!

However MyIE2 and IE both show the the .LNK favorite,DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CONFIGURE THE DESKTOP FAVORITES LIST TO SHOW .LNK LINKS???? (And not just .URL LINKS)

Anyway, when i had IE open,i tried what he said about typing WHT in the address bar..I did it and came here!!!!!! (I have no alisas set up for IE!!!! (I dont use IE,i just brought it up for this favorites test)

So,if anyone could help me configure my DESKTOP favorites list to show other links besides .URL's it would be greatly appreaciated....

Thank you much

The Dude :)

hey, i just searchd to find an answer how to fix this problem with IE but had no luck. I then started F'ing around and guess what, i found a solution. I don't know exactly what made it work but i know what i did to make it work.

Click tools, then internet options. Then click "Delet Cookies" and also under the temperorily internet files click "Delet Files...". Then I'm thinking this is what solved everything, go to the Content Tab and click the "AutoComplete" button and uncheck Web Address. It workd for me so let me know if it workd for you guys too.

Crap well its happening again, so i don't know. It workd though for a little bit.
