I know the terms Virtual Private Server and Virtual Dedicated Server are both accepted and used, however, I'm wondering which one is the proper term to use, if any.

93.3, I would have thought they are both just as acceptable as each other.

However, I recently decided to research VPS/VDS and when you search for VPS, I only got Virtual servers, however with VDS I actually got many “virtual hosting, Dedicated Servers)

Search: Virtual Private Server: Google & Yahoo

Search: Virtual Dedicated Server: Google & Yahoo

So overall I would say Virtual Private Server.

Warm Regards to you

Jason

VPS is more popular but they are the same thing. Its to the point we had to put it in as an FAQ :)

I like VDS better -- there are Dedicated Servers as well as Virtual Dedicated Servers. ;)

While they are commonly called the same thing, in our org. it refers to:
VPS: shell without root access
VDS: shell with root access, 1 of several on a VDS server.

Guess we need to update our terminology.

It'd be interesting to know which was first used and which came later on.

"Virtual Private Server" is a Registered Trademark of Verio.

Where do you figure Verio trademarked Virtual Private Server? e.g. looking at http://hosting.verio.com/index.php/vpsmanaged_vps.html I see no trademark notices on those words.

I think VDS could be a bit misleading. The box is only 'dedicated' in certain respects. For example, the have a dedicated file system, dedicated IP, dedicated .... But it's not physically dedicated to the customer (as in a regular dedicated server).

I use VPS. It seems to describe the setup a bit better.

However, it looks like people are using the terms interchangeably. So whichever works for you, I guess.

It is probably going to be like 'what is the difference between an inkjet and bubblejet printer?'. Different name same product.

VDS in that case would make more sense... besides, didn't the term VDS come out first?
