For the dialtone's raq deal, don't forget ... You need to sign a 12 months contract for the colocation at $79.99/mo ... Still, a good deal (especially if you don't need much bandwith), but you may dislike it (as some do) to sign a 12 months contract ....

cheers,

Thanks dektong.

I have been doing more reasearch jere at WHF, but found scary stories about dialtone which made me hesitating!

Is it really that bad? Their support people sound very nice!

I would appreciate it if someone can advice me regarding this!

Thank you.

We have been with Dialtone for just over a month and don't have any complaints.

We are relatively new to dedicated servers and they have been quick to answer any questions we have had.

Aloha
well I would say a few thigns
depends on how much bandwith you are planning on using ?
multipleimages deal will get you a stronger machine
where as rackshack will get you a large amount of bandwith
I have a racksahck box and they have gotten tons better on support there network is very fast and good for me
if you are not going to be running super intensive sites a raq at racksahck is a good deal.
I have had no experience with multipleimage so can not say
but they seem to be here a lot and sure you could do a search and compare

so I can not say one way or the other the later 2 are completely dif machines
I would go with a racksahck over a dialtone deal any day though

I have been with multipleimage.com for above a month now. Tim has been very helpful to me, and the price was right(99.9 a month). Tech support is also great, very response and helpful.

aloha
guess I should have summed up better
so if you need a box to run sites that are going to be using resources etc...
go with multipleimage
if you need tons of bandwith adn are running mostly static sites go with racksahck

Dialtoneinternet is operated by incompetent people, managed by dishonest people and their accounting practice is a fraud.

Wow, you are still preaching this. Did you have backups with your new hoster? Maybe you actually learned something

We've not used multipleimage or rackshack, but have had a stellar experience with Dialtone. You've got to feel for WebMaster2 though :bawling:

But for us, tech support has been very helpful. They've even gone out of their way to make good suggestions for server configuration and so forth. Last tech issue I had was answered in less than 5 min...and it wasn't even an emergency.

As far as honesty goes--they've credited our acct in the past with no questions asked.

And finally, yes, we keep a backup of our files

$899.99 and Co-Locate it for $79.99/month is Dialtone's new special offer. I guess you've missed the previous offer.

i never gone with dialtone because of there 12 months contract.

i wonder why a good company with good support and deal want to stuck people for 12 months. don't they believe in them self. or what's the catch.

if i had server with my provider and i don't have any downtime or billing problems i will never ever think of moving my servers from them.

I HATE CONTRACTS. who is host anyway to bind me for 12 months. i am customer if i feel good with them i will host with them for my life. price is not a factor. companies offering cheap deals can not remain in business for long time. so it really doesn't matters $79 / $99 or $149. all it matters there should be fair deal and support time. to professionals $50-$500 doesn't mean anything.

anyway i had never hosted with them and don't have any experience with this company.

I am just expressing my thoughts. and i don't say dailtone is good or bad. i just don't like there contract thing.

Okay, just got back from a long vacacation and let me say this about Dialtone:

Just go back and read the full stories I have posted about Dialtone and imagine the same things happen to you. To those dialtone customers, the exact same event may happen to you, as the same people are monitoring your server(s), and the same management would handle your cases.

From a technical point of view, nothing can guard against the manual destruction Dialtone people carried out.

How often do you backup, every day? every week? What about data inserted/updated AFTER the backup?

Without a manual reformat of the drive, even in the event of the hardware failure, you may still get the data off the media by paying around $500 (there are services that recovers data).

With Dialtone's complete manual wipe-off, all data since last backup are lost permanently.

Also, where do you store the backups? Are they subject to the threat of the same kind of willful destruction? Does your backup service offer minimum protection against such manual destructions?

We signed up with them when they had only a handful of customers, when they had their data center at DC (I believe). The reason we chose Dialtone then was because their semmingly low price. The service at the DC center was not so bad. Then they moved all their stuff to Florida, immediately we had a lot of unpleasant experiences. The people are very tough to talk with. For example, at the DC center, we had a 333MHZ server, and we added a 4GB hard drive for backup use, the cost was $45/month., make the total $249. When they moved to Florida, they moved the data to a different machine with a single 8GB hard drive, the server was being sold at a price of $225 on their web. But Dialtone kept billing us ~$249. We contacted them, their VP replies:
"The deal when the movement was done was a better server
for the same amount you were paying ($249). You got a
better CPU and the same Hard Drive capacity. That is why
what we have billed you so far is rigth."

We wasted a lot of time talking back and forth with them and they refused to credit the money (249-225) for the previous months back, their VP agreed to charge us $225 (their listed price)from then on and went on saying
"Please be aware tha I'm
giving you this offer ($225) not because I think that you were
charged unfairly but because I want you to be happy with
our company."

Very unpleasant, indeed.

When you sign up for a dedicated host and if there is a long contract and 30 days advanced written cancellation requirement, it is very difficult to get off the hook. To move a server and reconfigure stuff takes substantial time, so as long as your server is running, you just want to focus on more important things....

We learnt our lessons hard.

I moved my service from Dialtone to RackShack. The pricing is much better at Rackshack and they don't nickle and dime you to death. Plus, look at the bandwidth difference. Incredible!

When I tried to cancel my 6 month contract with Dialtone, they said they automatically renewed me for another 6 months. I missed it by one week. They were very unflexible, threatening to sue if I didn't pay for another 6 months, the whole shibang. The problem is that I had wiped my server with them clean and powered it down. Still they were going to charge me $189/month for the next 6 months for a dead machine! Finally I talked them into selling me a raq3 for $95 /month. But the whole ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth.

Support: Dialtone will try to charge you just to ask a simple linux question. also, hope your Spanish is good, you're going to need to know a few choice words. On a side note, the DI techs seem to be slightly more knowledgeable than at RS, but RS is getting better and they have an awesome community of other raq owners who always willing to help.

Just yesterday I got an email from DialtoneInternet explaining that I owed them $100 /month for using their IP address. It seems that the InterNIC will not update my nameserver information. I moved my nameserver to RS Ip address months ago and it still shows the old one at network solutions. NOw first of all, DI registered the Name Server when I bought the server from them, not me. Anyways, I changed the IP for the Name Server with my registrar but still InterNIC is screwed up (who the hell still uses them anyways?).

Soooooooo....

I sent an email back to DI basically telling them to get a life. That really bugged me.

I don't like to whine (Ok maybe a little :D ), but I have to agree with Web Master 2. They're fine as long as you cancel 30 days before your 6 months runs out (you cannot cancel at any other time) or you don't ever need any support. I hate companies that charge to reboot.

We got an email from Dialtone titled "Lame use of our IP" or something like that (I remember the "Lame" word), for a InterNIC entry that has been moved away long since DI wiped out our drive. The email asked for $100/month.

I think what DI is doing to us is typical, the same people are running the service, they can't be discriminating against us, they are dealing their customers the same way. Those who are still with DI won't criticize DI openly, because their data are being held at DI's place, but if you poll all DI customers, I think you will discover their business operating pattern.

webmaster 2 what is your malfunction?

You have a vendetta against DI for what appears to have been a very strange mess up.

Personally I am still with DI for the following positives

fastest connectivity of any datacentre I have had servers at
Competive Pricing
Top Support
Ability to negotiate every aspect of pricing

To be honest I wouldn't reccommend them to anyone who isn't at least comfertable with Apache, BIND and *nix in general but for the rest of us they are a top provider.

DT must have really pushed you to the brink WebMaster2.

If you don't cool down, dial tone might erase your mind too. Better make a backup.

The horror, the horror...

Back to topic! DaveC makes a good point. It pays to be familiar with your basics at dial tone. Their control panel is trim. You might be able to get by hosting static HTML with their panel, but for a lot of other things you'll need the command line.

WM2, I think the point is that we've read the story before, and other than saying, "Search the board for my experiences", enough is enough. While what happened was unfortunate, and was their fault, but I'm sure you'd agree that this sort of thing isn't the norm.

I'm just curious did you pay for the $100.00 dollar? I owe them a balance of $300.00+ and I'm not planning to pay. :D
