MattF 01-17-2004, 02:25 PM Hi Jeff,
I hope things are going well.
Any plans to add rsync?
sailor 01-17-2004, 03:42 PM hows my vegas party buddy doing? :D
looking at it. still concerned over the issue of secuirity related with it . why dont you pm me and maybe we can put up a test server for some of you guys if you are willing to put a little config time on it and if it all goes well we will roll it out.
I have ordered one from this guy and man, the service is great, you can't be wrong going with this guy.
Great job, sailor.
JHServers 01-18-2004, 05:02 AM Hmm, unlimited backup times? Don't you think this could start using a lot of bandwidth and be expensive? Also if you do get rsync set up, please let me know I might be interested..
dinek 01-18-2004, 08:12 AM This might be a lame question.... but this is probably the best place to ask.... what is rsync?
Thanks Dino.
blackmoont 01-18-2004, 08:29 AM i'v order 20G with them :D great one . Very fast network . Work great with cpanel :D . Thank you for a best backup soluttion i'v ever seen ,

I'm betting that the box(es) that are running this backup solution, is on a cheaper bandwidth provider, that gives unmetered download bandwidth ;) Think about it. If a guy buys a 100GB hunk of space, the company it self breaks even on the hard drive space in less than a month. Most people aren't gonna be pulling thier backups OFF the server every month. Maybe, if they run into problems, once every 6 - 8 months? Lets say in 6 months they DO have to pull off, well, the company already made $300 off the dude. Even after hardware cpsts & bandwidth costs, i bet the company still puts $150 in thier own pockets :)

how much are you betting?
you can paypal the amount to my account if you like - cuz you lost on that one. :)
this is on our network - we dont even have a seperate offering for cheaper bandwidth.

Thanks - I am glad you like it and it works for you. we spent a lot of time figuring this one out.
sightz 01-18-2004, 04:18 PM I was thinking that maybe this is a good way for them to balance incoming/outgoing traffic if their DC allows only so much of each. Most hosts never have as much incoming as outgoing.
Anyway, I am using it and am a very happy customer. I can BU all my sites without using up the limited monthly transfer my ISP allows.
I am anxiously awaiting rsync and fxp, but it works with Cpanel for now.
DeltaAnime 01-18-2004, 04:23 PM Ah, you took it as a put down. Nah, i didn't mean it that way. It'd be quite the smart move to get it on something that doens't cost a fortune since pings won't be a huge deal :) The big thing is fast speeds and it being online no? Then even, maybe, cogent would suffice (I would think) :)
Sorry if you took it the wrong way. I'm hopin' this deal holds up for a while, since I may offer my customers a spot on this service.

well...maybe a little - but I was mainly having a little fun with it while getting the correct information out.
it can be quite a difference - on upload however depending on the peering and network for upload speeds. we have 6 direct paths at gig level into our facility which makes the upload fantastic.
qm8309 01-18-2004, 10:30 PM sailor: i have a question out of curisity. do u have any security measures in place to prevent people from abusing the service? say using the backup space as some sort of ftp mirror?
Akash 01-18-2004, 10:37 PM ^^^ What he said (and subscribing to this thread :D)

yes we do. we will immeidately terminate any one caught doing this and we will catch you and make an example out of them on this board :) . further more - we will be implementing another level over the next few days that will make it even harder.
but most people in my experience wont abuse it.

Two other points for many people...if today you are getting a second drive for backup, you can (1) save the money, and (2) have a true backup which is off-server and maybe even off-site.
rubysky 01-19-2004, 04:58 AM what are the better alternatives to automate backup from one of my dedicated box? ( yes, i do have shell access )

perl script to dump data and ftp is up on cron job as well as some open source programs.
FamilyHost 01-19-2004, 01:44 PM Hmmm, as soon as I have data to backup I think this is for me!
ffeingol 01-19-2004, 03:19 PM I assume that this is ftp only access? no scp?

that is correct
sirtwist 01-19-2004, 06:54 PM Do you have a page somewhere listing the details of this service and exactly what is offered? I'd like to especially know whether the server is backed up to removable media and if so, how often, etc. Any other details you can think of would be nice too. :)
Thanks!

that is in the works. you can also see the last thread for some of the questions asked as well. its about 6 days ago in this section.
it is not backed up to removable media at this price - however if that is important to you I will make it happen. :)
I can get you a price quote on it if you are interested.
Most people ask about it -but when they find we can do it for a charge - there is no further interest.
what other specific questions do you have other than what has already been outlined in this offer?
portalplanet 01-19-2004, 07:33 PM I'm a little slow. How would my hsphere server get backed up? I guess I would install a script and it would run on a cron job?
Justin
universal2001 01-20-2004, 08:31 AM I'm currently using it. Very fast :)
Only complaint I have is, it would be good if they provided us with an example FTP cronjob script so we can backup our files. At the moment I am doing manual backups. :(
ravan 01-27-2004, 01:43 AM Can you later upgrade to a plan with more space if you want at the same price (per GB of course)? I assume so, but just checking.

yes - no problem at all - in fact we hope you do. ;)
Akash 01-27-2004, 11:28 PM Is this a special promotion that will be expiring soon?
