Unmetered bandwidth as a whole is non-existant. Though there is "unmetered bandwidth" where you are capped on a port, ex. 10Mbps.

Why pay for windows on an FTP server? Linux/*BSD have had a lot more development there and they'll open your hosting options considerably.

Why open yourself to the inherent insecurity of Windows, when a linux/BSD server will do the same job and do it even better.

I'm not saying Windows can't be insecure, but it takes more maintenance to keep it secure.

An idea of your budget would also help in recommending something.

Bull, Bull, Bull. A fresh default install of Windows 2003 Server is going to be just as or more secure as a default install of Linux from a typical dedicated server company.

What maintenance do yo speak of? You subscribe to the MS security patch update service, and every time they issue a patch you are notified via email. Download and install the patch, reboot in some instances, all in less then five minutes. Three quarters of the time the patch is already waiting for you when you login because of Windows Update.

The constant "Oh Windows is so insecure, Linux is the way to go" argument is a load of crap and getting really old.

Comments like these are a bunch of crap. EVERY operating system has it's security flaws. It's up to the admin of the box to stay on top of security issues regardless of platform. As far as maintaince is concerned, they all require hardening . To say one will do it better... thats a matter or preference.

ps, how does windows automatic updates differ from lets say redhats up2date, debians aptget, gentoo's emerge, or bsd's cvsup/ports ? If anything, im going have to say windows requires less work.

this is all coming from a guy who prefers bsd...

I know no OS is secure, I just believe Windows is a requires a little more maintenance than linux/BSD, which just could be a little informed opinion as I haven't had the pleasure of trying Windows 2003 yet. The number of virusses and worms that effect Windows systems is far greater than the amount that effect linux/BSD.

Still, let's save the Windows vs. open source debate for another thread, I didn't really mean to spark it here, I just wanted to know why it was so important that the system run Windows, as no matter how it compares to open source, it's still going to add to the price tag while it might not be necessary.

Maybe the thread starter is far more familiar with Windows in a server environment, in which case it would make a lot of sense to continue using it, even if it's only for an FTP server.

Well , nice little flame war we have going here .
I think I'll weight in (now weres my flame thrower supreem?)
Windows out of the box is a whole heck of a lot less secure than OpenBSD out of the box (I think they went 5 years without a remote root exploit in the default install....)
Debian linux and debian based distributions have a wonderfull security updating system , not entirelly disimillar to windows update except that it works and doesnt spy on you http://www.securityfocus.com/news/2746.
If I remember correctly one of the big wigs on NT-bugtraq was complaing awhile ago how windows update would often give the "all clear" even when critical patches needed to be installed (dont know if this has since been fixed).

Back on the original topic.
Check out :
http://www.nocster.com/10mbps.shtml (if you search around for resellers you might be able to get a better price) .
*******.com might be able to offer something (If I remember correcetly $50/mb for cogent only bandwith).
Best of luck :-)

Why does people here debating which OS is secure while the first poster is asking WHERE to find an unmetered Win server....?

People on WHT these days...
