Is there an advantage to registering a domain name with a registrar that is different from the host? For example, I register my domain with Dotster, but I host my site with some other company. I'm thinking the advantage would be that I maintain some independence, more ownership, and it might be easier to switch hosts if I need to at a later date.

Ye be thinkin right matey. ;) When you register the domain separately you know that you submitted your info. Through the host you're rolling the dice that they might put in their info for contacts instead of yours and you getting no control over it if you have the need to leave. Plus you get to choose where to register and the price you're willing to pay for the domain when doing it separately.

OK, but if I don't have a host yet, when I register my new domain, what do I enter as the email adress for the admin and tech contacts? Do I put in any of my current but maybe temporary email adresses, like me@yahoo and then change it later when I get email set up on my new host?

tilt,
yes that is right..You can just put anything there for the meantime.. or just leave it blank if you can.....You will be able to change it when you get a host....

Actually some registrars require notification of transfer to be verified by the listed Administrator of the domain before they allow changes to that portion.
So, leaving it blank or using an anonymous address may not be a good idea.
You may want to review just what the requirements are with the registrar you plan to use first.

I would put yourself for everything (of course I'm power hungry). If you want full control over your domain, don't start giving slots away as to who can stall you from switching at any point in time.
