Traceroute ends at the backbone.

Good reason to get out of the contract and to say fu** you!
I really have to think again about the projects we had with them!

That stinks :(

Well, I hate to say it again; you get what you pay for. I hope they are not down long for all who are hosted with them.

Did their router die or something? It seems that way from the traceroute.

It's clear now, that EFS is not an option if you want reliable co-location provider. Are there any other companies that offer co-location with free 1U space and bandwidth for less than $2/Gb? I know about Tera-Byte's Plan B's $2.5/Gb, which is still a bit too expensive for me as I need close to 200 Gb per month.

Hey,

This is a little off topic, but I remember seeing people complain about ECI/EFS being routed through Cogent. I have a feeling this might be something to do with ExchangeColo (EFS/ECI are located there) signing a partnership with Cogent earlier this year, June? Here's the URL of the press release from ExchangeColo. http://www.exchangecolo.com/news_press_03.htm

Although I'm no longer a customer of EFS/ECI, I do know what's been going on lately...or at least part of it. This week's downtime was due to the installation of their new Qwest line, and setting up BGP-4. I don't know if they are still having problems, but there may be a few issues left to work out. I've emailed Jacques at EFS the link to this thread, and I'm sure he'll be replying soon.

Take it easy on the bandwagon. It's not so easy to get off once you jump on.

Here's what they replied yesterday (sorry didn't have time to post it here until now):
Sorry about the downtime yesterday. Our router had a little problem with
the BGP encrypted passwords with all three service providers so we had to
reboot the router (including all BGP sessions). My engineer was still at
home when this happened and that's why it took him a while to beat traffic
and get to the data center.

My engineer was still at home when this happened and that's why it took him a while to beat traffic and get to the data center.WOW, that is scary!

Just for comparison, last month all our 3 lines were moved over to a new AS (new BGP routing path which is a major upgrade). We experienced a total of "0" minutes of downtime. How is this possible? By running dual, total redundant, systems. You make the updates to one, while the other is active. Once you are satisfied with the first, move and update the second. This way if you have "a little problem with the BGP encrypted passwords" and have to reboot the router, it's a non-issue. The downside to this is redundancy costs money.

Is 5-6 hours, of downtime, for an "unannounced" network upgrade acceptable, well that's up to the individual. But, what happens when they have to update the router's OS because of a security fix or software bug? Another 5-6 "unannounced" upgrade outage?

If you expect to find a cheap bandwidth provider with a solid/fast/reliable network; they don't exist.

My take on EFS; if connectivity is not that big an issue for you, they are probably a great choice for high bandwidth users.

My 2 pesos, for what is it worth :)
