View Full Version : Spam from GoDaddy
cartika-andrew 01-15-2004, 10:50 PM Hmmmmm,
I think Ive received this before, but just deleted it.
This is kinda annoying, as we register most of our customers domains (in their name, and with their contact information) with GoDaddy, in return for bringing them business, they are spamming our customers, offering their web hosting services....
Very annoying
We've been resisting offering domain registration, cause honestly we didnt want to bother....but, may have to reconsider..
Dear Valued Go Daddy Customer,
Who wouldn't want a Web site of their very own? Especially if building it was easy, fast, fun - and affordable!
So here's the challenge I laid down for our programmers: Make a Web site builder specifically for all the folks who think, "I could NEVER build a Web site."
Make it easy, I said.
You just pick a template. Add your own photos or graphics. Type in your own text. And that's it! No manuals to read, no technical language to learn, no FTP-ing, HTML-ing, DNS-ing... (And no need to even know what those mean!) You CAN build your very own Web site!
Make it fast, I said.
You build your site in real time. You just log on to your Internet connection. Click your mouse, hunt and peck your way across a keyboard, and in just the time it takes to do it, your site gets built - and future updates are just as easy. In minutes - literally - you CAN build your very own Web site!
5-page Web site
Just $4.95/mo
10-page Web site
Just $8.95/mo
20-page Web site
Just $12.95/mo
Hosting & email included!
Tell Me More
*Works on Windows 9x,
IE 5.5 or later
Make it fun, I said.
Who has the patience to learn another software program? The Internet's where the action is - and that's where WebSite Tonight™ is, too! You build your Web site right inside your familiar browser window. The more your site grows, the more you see how cool it is, the more fun it gets. You CAN build your very own Web site!
And make it affordable, I said.
Plans start at just $4.95 per month -- you have your choice of
5-, 10- and 20-page options. And that includes hosting and a FREE email account. Plus, buy 12 months now and you'll save up to an additional 36%! You CAN afford your very own Web site
Yep, goDaddy have been sending them out a lot lately. I only just got our last domain away from them, and into our eNom account.
I would suggest using wildwestdomains as a reseller if you don't want to splash out too much, but still protect yourself from the goDaddy emails.
I know wildwest is the same guys, but at least your customers won't get the SPAM. You could even manually add each domain, so you wouldn't have to do the storefront.
Either that, or eNom (my preference - easy to use - no hassles, and very very easily integrated into H-Sphere  )
eddy2099 01-15-2004, 11:01 PM Log into your GoDaddy account and click on Account Settings and turn off the email notification. Then it will stop.
cartika-andrew 01-15-2004, 11:06 PM Thanks Simon...
Its too bad, GoDaddy has worked great for us, and our customers all liked it as well....
eNom it is (its probably about time anyway, we should've already been offering domain names)

Hi Eddy,
Yes, that will stop me from receiving, but not our customers...
and really - this is the annoying part...
CybexHost 01-15-2004, 11:22 PM I find it rude that they feel that they are permitted to email those who registered their domain through godaddy.
Project X 01-16-2004, 11:10 AM oh now that would totally p!$$ me off!
i only used godaddy once and tehy sucked real bad.
id never use them again.
i wont even buy my aftermarket names if the person has it registered at godaddy
godaddy-the NEW network solutions
ps what kind of stupid name is godaddy anyways? what is that supposed to mean?
XYPHEN 01-16-2004, 11:20 AM One email is not a spam... maybe you guys subscribed to their newsletter or something.

Incorrect unsolicited contact (via email in this case) is "spam"
I use onlinenic as a domain reseller so no problems there :D
cartika-andrew 01-16-2004, 11:55 AM Thanks Robert,
I dont particularly mind them sending me an email per se. What I do mind is that they are offering a product which is competitive to the services a good percentage of their customers (hosting companies) offer. So, any host using GoDaddy as their registrar of choice, will have their customer base receiving marketing material for a competitive offering....
Seems like a horrible way to treat you VARS...
Either way, Im taking Simons advise and setting up an eNom account - it integrates smoothly with Hsphere - so now, I will be reselling domain names (which is something I never wanted to do).
In the long run, I dont see how this type of action can help GoDaddy. I understand they are trying to create additional revenue streams, but doing it at the expense of the companies putting the bread on their table, does not seem like a wise decision to me - though, what the heck do I know...
Tech Glitch 01-16-2004, 01:12 PM I get spam about 4 times a month from godaddy.
GWDGuy 01-16-2004, 06:13 PM Well I don't know why you would be getting spam from them. I have talked to Sean Parsons many times and they say they are against it so I find this very strange..
I think I know what is happening and why you would be getting an email and No it is not Spam..
When you buy a domain name from godaddy or WWD at the end of the shopping cart right before you pay there are two check boxes one asks if it is okay to send promotional offers and one asks if you want it in plain text or HTML.. By default it is Yes and HTML. So my best guess since I always check No to getting offers and I have never gotten anything from them in over 2 years and over 200 domains I think that is where the problem is coming in.
Now if you did check No and you are 100% you should pick up the phone call and ask for Sean or Bob Parsons and ask them why they are spamming.
Go Daddy has to be one of the better companies to deal with. Phone contacts 24/7, email support with an answer always within 24 hours.
Robert
AFMichael 01-16-2004, 06:18 PM I have not had a single problem with GoDaddy e-mailing me or my clients anything at all and I've been purchasing domains through them for 3-4 years now. Am I a lucky one?

Well,
myself and my customers are getting them..
and ... if you care about the domain business that hosts are bringing you, maybe you should be careful about what material you're sending out...
1 thing to advertise on their site (which I send customers to frequently to buy domains), completely different to be sending them promotional material...
Either way, I blame myself... We should've been offering domain registration from the start - we honestly didnt want to get into it...
Not much choice now...
GWDGuy 01-16-2004, 06:33 PM Okay so let me get this right.. You have a link on your page that has an affiliate link in it so when you send someone to GoDaddy and they buy a domain and don't uncheck the "can we send you promotion" box you are upset with go daddy?
I see your point that you are a host and you don't want them sending your clients information about hosting but their affiliate account is just like anyone else's.. I doubt very much when a buyer comes in they know much more than it is a sale and that the person okay'd them sending them an email.
This is why they have the WWD program and for $100/year you get your own domain site and make money, real money from selling domains plus default name servers and lots of other great features. We have been on their reseller program for... I think 2 years... maybe more and it is great.. We make a lot of money each month selling domains at $10/pop and do no work for it.
Again I see your gripe but if someone comes to my site and says Sure send me info darn right I will and I don't care what business sent me the customer... Go Daddy has done nothing wrong in this case.
Robert
cartika-andrew 01-16-2004, 07:50 PM Hi GWD,
Nope, they havent done anything "wrong"...
As I previously said, I blame myself...
Whether its right or wrong, they have def made a mistake, at least in my opinion, which is why Im taking my business elsewhere.
There are alot of hosts, or web masters with reseller accounts, etc...that send their domain registration business to GoDaddy...
I think this is bad business...and Im sure Im not the only one...
As for making money reselling domains - we were not really interested in this....but now that we must do it, why would I choose GoDaddy to do business with?
Anyway, thanks for your comments - and for the record, I agree with most of your points... doesnt change the fact this frustrated the heck out of me...
jackpot101 01-16-2004, 09:01 PM Try namecheap..It's excellent and I consider it over godaddy quiet often
