View Full Version : Domain Hoggers [edited]
mouseFX 01-15-2004, 10:31 PM It amazes me how many good domains are registered but not used.
That just cheeses me off!

b.m.2 01-15-2004, 10:42 PM Hmmmm.... I don't see how it's any different that lots of land that aren't developed. It's real estate and its a business. Some people are in the online real estate business and could care less about development. I really don't see how that is wrong or upsetting. JMO.
hendricknet 01-15-2004, 10:43 PM No smiley for a squatter... :(
nuthin 01-15-2004, 10:58 PM first in, first serve i say.
it might cheese you off, but domain reselling can be a profitable business and there's quite a few people at this particular forum who are making quite a bit of money from it.
Esr Tek 01-15-2004, 11:10 PM Speakin of this subject.. I just had someone pull a squat on me when contactd him about a domain he hasn't used in 2yrs. Of course he was 'planning on using it soon'
It does 'cheese' me off too...
westcan 01-15-2004, 11:14 PM boo hoo
nuthin 01-15-2004, 11:14 PM first thing you should do if you want a domain thats been 'squatted' on or inactive is not contact them :)
they will always then have an upper-hand and know that somebody likes the domain they have.
of course; you get a little cheesed off, but you really can't do much.. what ticks me off is those companies with big pockets -- ult search, buydomains.
my advice; backorder the domain* doesnt always work but its a good way or just move on and find another domain available.
amusive.com 01-15-2004, 11:15 PM I have a bunch, I have plans for them all, just not enough time to develop them all ;)
I do understand people that dislike when others buy domains just to buy domains, ie: to sell for profit (even though I really don't think that's a big deal either).

How's that?
mouseFX 01-15-2004, 11:46 PM I'm looking at developing a site around a particular name and 14 out of 15 domains have nothing on them.
I can understand buying domains that everyone wants, but they've cornered a market that may get 1 looker a year.
If you were into real estate would you really buy blocks in an estate that doesn't move, or buy shares in a company that doesn't produce?
Acroplex 01-15-2004, 11:55 PM Oh please...domains can be registered for cash since 1994. You're about 10 years late.

You have to look at the price and return of it. You never know when a market is going to open. My father purchased some land in Florida about 30 years ago, in a place called Kissimmee, back then it was dirt cheap, about 5 years ago, checking the land value its worth 15x what he paid for it.
Same goes with domains, right now it may seem that there is only 1 looker a year. But the cost for someone to hold on for a domain name is very very small. And the possibility for a high return is pretty good if the names become a niche or exploited later on.
Its almost like playing the lottery in some cases..
Acroplex 01-15-2004, 11:59 PM Trifolic, Kissimmee is still double-wide trailer alley :D
Incognito 01-16-2004, 12:00 AM There are millions of domains available, but somebody already took the one you wanted....better go tell mommy.....
Every day many good domains become available. In addition, there are lots of good ones not registered. Use some thought...you will find one that works for you. Don't get upset just because someone beat you to the punch.
As to the comment expressing doubt that after two years someone is going to use a domain, I just put one into use this week that I had held for over two years...just never got the time to develop it. In fact, enough domain talk. I think I'll go buy some more, before timechange beats me to them.

Its almost like playing the lottery in some cases.. I had a client in South Florida, who ran a business for 25 years and had nothing to show, except approximately 20 years earlier someone had owed him around $50,000 and couldn't pay, so traded him some land.....He sold the land in 1996 for $3.5 million, still undeveloped.

That "cube" does not work anymore though :D
Acroplex 01-16-2004, 12:03 AM Speaking of land in Florida my home gained $40k equity in 12 months, not bad :D

Who cares what it is.. The value of the land he own multiplied 15x from when he purchased it..
Acroplex 01-16-2004, 12:26 AM Yes I know. :D
And when Disney decides to donate some land to build the Tampa bullet train project, it will be worth even more.
