is there a program for a linux box that keeps an eye on what processes are running and will alert me (email) when a process goes berserk and starting to use all the cpu time and/or the server load goes over 1 or something like that ?

Why wouldn't it? It works like a charm.

Netsaint would be another one to look at (http://www.netsaint.org). Mostly the same features/functions as BB, but I think the interface is better.

If you download Netsaint, check out NEAT to do the config.
