View Full Version : Views on these Hosts and SMTP Mail boxes
Russ007 10-03-2001, 06:06 PM Hi,
Can anyone give me their views on the following companies:
http://www.34sp.com/
http://www.netrg.net
http://www.esitehosting.co.uk
Can anyone suggest a good SMTP mail company so I can send info from my domain name?
Regards,
Russ
AL-Benjamin 10-03-2001, 07:33 PM if you just want a smtp gateway do a search on a search engine such as google. Loads of them come up.
If all else fails then drop me a pm and you can use mine.;)
WaldoUK 10-04-2001, 10:06 AM About the SMTP... I know for a fact that 34SP don't offer an SMTP server with their packages (they are looking into it)... however, this does not mean you cannot send e-mail from (as an example) Russ007@yourdomain.com... for example, I send all my mail from my domain @aliasonline.net via my ISP's SMTP server (which is unfortunately smtp.btinternet.com  ).
If you have a half decent ISP then this is probably the best solution... for another domain that I have hosted I do get an SMTP server, but I don't use it as it's in America... it's quicker for me to send e-mail via my ISPs SMTP server :)
As for the actual companies... I've used 34SP.com, and I've been pretty happy with their service. Not sure about the other two you've listed there though.
Synergy 10-04-2001, 12:52 PM Most regular webhosting companies offer smtp nowadays.
WeinBar Jack 10-04-2001, 01:10 PM But not all ISP's allow you to utilize it. They block port 25.
AL-Benjamin 10-04-2001, 01:18 PM never quite understood that. It doesn't exactly use up bandwidth. Nearly 2000 people use one we have for our free hosting service and the bandwidth doesn't really register.
Its not cpu intensive either so no real argument could be used there either.
i forgot to post this before but ...
i was thinking about using netrg at one point, their responses to my questions were very helpful and promt.

The reason is simple... spammers.
richy 10-05-2001, 01:21 AM i had a problem with aohell and smtp, the problem being they dont offer one and neither did my hosting company at that time. my answer , run my own.
www.argosoft.com (nowt to do with me, im not promoting it just using it as an example so srry if im in breach of forum rules :()
beyond simple to use.
run Winipcfg.exe
put your isps dns in the settings.
change it to allow relay
and in your email programs smtp server box add your machines network name which should come up in the localhost line when you start the server. runs great.
srry if i misunderstood your question.

I disagree. If you set up a smtp server with safeguards you can still leave it open. For example, our server simply stops people from sending more than 10 emails in one go. Not bullet proof, but does the job.
Chicken 10-05-2001, 09:32 AM I agree that there are ways to limit it. What you mentioned combined with pop-auth is generally what is used. I wonder if people get around this using mailing lists (offered by the host)? Any experiences in this area?
AL-Benjamin 10-05-2001, 12:42 PM sorry , the tools for mailing lists that i use only ever use sendmail.
ehsan 02-20-2003, 03:02 PM 34sp works great ;)
