View Full Version : .ws domains
ttremeth 01-13-2004, 06:53 PM Hey,
What is the go with .ws domains these days. Can not transfer and the renewal price has skyrocked.
I got a great name when they were cheap all but now they are expensive. Just see registeryfly.com for how expensive.
Was it a raught to suck you in until you now rely on the domain? We just run a non-money making kids site.
complx.net 01-13-2004, 07:21 PM Well....... for transfers that sure does stink.
But atleast for new ones godaddy (and resellers) still have em under $10

In my opinion, great and .ws are mutually exclusive. .ws is a contrived gimmicky overpriced network marketing scheme. I have never bought one and seriously doubt that I will ever. Why you could buy Western Samoa for what they want for some of their prime names.
ttremeth 01-13-2004, 08:20 PM My site is not a business so i just wanted the key word is all. With a forum this large I was looking for someone who knew something.
The same keyword came available in .info so I got it but in the meantime I have to live with it. It was $9.99 when I got it and it ranks very well in google and number one for its word in msn.
The .ws is irelevant.

The .ws is irelevant. I disagree...I believe it is quite relevant. I believe many people will automatically type the .com instead. Furthermore, I believe many will associate the .ws with various forms of sleaze including business opportunity scams, mlm scams, and other trickery and thievery. Just my feelings. I see a .ws and I don't even go there. The time may come when the extension is less relevant, but right now it is highly relevant.
ttremeth 01-13-2004, 08:46 PM Perhaps you are right with your feelings but that might be your association and perception. I have not had this experience. I receive 100-300 unique visits per day from parents.
I have seen plenty of .com/net/ and whatever else going to sleezy, porno sites.
The relevance for a business might be important but mute in this instance. I was merely trying to learn more about the why they do not allow transfers anymore.
Names translate to ip addresses don't they?
snoop 01-14-2004, 01:57 AM agree, of course the extension is relevant, probably a lot of visitors won't be able to remember your site due to the unusual extension, and if you truly don't care about the extension why not just use a free geocities or .tk address?
ttremeth 01-14-2004, 03:55 AM Crap! The site is no1 in msn for its key word. Opinions do not help, facts do. Please help with facts on why the ws domains can not be transferred.
Stick to the thread. People need to read the original thread and answer it. If you want to stand on your freken soap box, start another thread.

Stick to the thread. People need to read the original thread and answer it. If you want to stand on your freken soap box, start another thread. Then you don't want them posting in your thread...sorry, that isn't your choice. The facts related to transfers and everything else gear around the whole .ws concept-the fact that they are run differently than the more legitimate domains, that there pricing is subject to their own whims and policies, and that they were and are more difficult for most registrars to deal with, that much of their advertising and promotion has been misleading, and that they are and will continue to be manipulated by the .ws group. Good luck with them. Who knows what their price will be next.
Also, note that my opinions are based on fact obtained through various surveys and polls. I don't doubt the keyword success you mention. Certainly, search engines treat .ws like anything else. However, that is separate from my concerns as mentioned.

well lets just hope all your visitors navigate the web using msn rather than the broswer bar.
ttremeth 01-14-2004, 04:59 PM Thanks for all the opinions but can someone give me information, specific information about my question. Give me information that helps, because as yet you have alluded to it but give me some links. Did I say that I wanted to stay with a .ws domain?
Substantiate your statements with facts. Web links, articles etc. Your opinions register the general concern that I have never encountered until now. I have not had the same experiences you have. That's what makes the world interesting.
If you refer to surveys, where is your reference for them? But again, tell me why they can not be transfered as google etc only alluded to threads like this.
As far as msn goes, internet explorer is by far the biggest browser used for my site in many years of stats. Overwhelming actually. If they type the key word in the browser window they get my site as number one.
