View Full Version : How to become top 10 search on Yahoo?
Fremont Servers 10-03-2001, 02:29 PM Hello,
You know when you search for keyword "web hosting" via Yahoo's search engine, how do you get your website to be one of the 10?
WaldoUK 10-03-2001, 02:56 PM Obviously, stuff like proper Page Titles, META tags, etc, etc will all help. Also, instead of just filling the Keywords with every possible variation on hosting, try to actually use these words on your page (normally boosts up listings).
Also, there are nice pieces of software out there which help with Keyword Analysis. For example, when I typed into one "website hosting" it gives me a list of other related keywords. "website hosting" is quite broad, so try to narrow it down... here's a few of the ones it came out with:
free web hosting
web site hosting
cheap web hosting
free web site hosintg
web hosting services
web page hosting
adult web hosting
low cost web hosting
affordable web hosting
etc, etc, etc... you get the point ;)
Try to be specific in your keywords... it might mean that you won't attain a top 10 position for "website hosting" but you may well get a top 10 position for "affordable unix web hosting" :)
I hope that helps... I've just started learning all the tricks to get good search engine rankings... it's a bloody mystery :D
Fremont Servers 10-03-2001, 03:00 PM All, if not most, web hosting companies use the keyword, "web hosting" and/or "hosting". How to become to 10 if all these web hosting companies use they keywords?
WaldoUK 10-03-2001, 03:06 PM And that's where the problem lies... if I was looking for a new host, I wouldn't really use Yahoo or Altavista, I'd come here. But say I had a temporary fit of insanity and decided to use a search engine, I wouldn't search for web hosting... I'd search for Unix hosting... I'd be more specific to sort out all the crap results from the info I actually need.
The other important thing is to get other sites linking to yours... how you do this is up to you. Certainly, I know Google (which powers Yahoo doesn't it?) lists that as being very important. Try and get some reciprocal link systems going.
However, I will repeat two points:
--> "Web hosting" is quite a broad term!
--> For hosts in particular, one of the best methods of getting new customers is word of mouth. If I speak to a customer who recommends you then I'm obviously going to consider you as a good host... whether you were listed in the Top 10 at Yahoo would not change my opinions on you as a host. :)
Fremont Servers 10-03-2001, 03:12 PM When you put keyword in the meta tag, is it case sensitive?
Will there be a difference between "web hosting" and "Web hosting"?
If a person search for "web hosting" and you put "Web Hosting" in your meta tag, will your site show up?

Aloha
well yes in a indirect way as some engines use case sensitive searches so ifyou are not case senitive and hte engine someone uses is then it will not work correct ;(
this is another reason to go all low case by default as some engines will look for lower case by default and if it is in upper will look to lower but not the other way around
( I read this somewhere about SEO stuff)
a big pain in the ;)
Also on the if all people are using the same meta tags
there are a few thigns that can relate
one is age of document
another is the title of the page
also the first bit of text in the document
also the links within that first bit and link names
say a link is to this board adn you name it a name such as below examples:
a Link name of
<web hosting>
<web hosting talk>
<research a host>
<go here>
now the first one will usually rate higher then the second as it is more focused to the search term <web hosting>
<go here>
is pretty much useless ;)
anyway read spider food and searchenginewatch
study other pages etc...
and you will go far
I have gotten pages first in Yahoo
under terms such as
aviation empoyment
(actually a very competitive field)
so you can do it
it took me about a year to get on the top though so remember sow and steady
Rome wasnt built in a day
(they told me it took 2 weeks)
hehhehe
best of luck
iVersit 10-03-2001, 04:33 PM Actually, you can pay Yahoo! for listings in the top ten as it is a directory, not a search engine.
Fremont Servers 10-03-2001, 05:09 PM Do you mean the $199 one?
There directory is too hugh.
I couldn't find one related to hosting?
fuzzy71 10-03-2001, 05:18 PM Meta Words is the Key.
also, Yahoo can give you that if you pay a few dollars :) .
check the ADD site Link under Computer section of yahoo
Dexter 10-03-2001, 06:09 PM no clue how to get high up on the search, especially for web hosting. probabbly lots of money :D

Actually, its $299 now, not $199. But from what I hear, the results can be well worth it...
Take care,
Brian
mithilesh 10-04-2001, 08:15 PM some company provide promotional offer for this job.You should try it but their charges is so high .:)
remarkable 10-04-2001, 09:40 PM You have no choice but to pay them. It just dumped $299 to get in.
Check out: http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Internet_and_World_Wide_Web/Network_Service_Providers/Hosting/
I'm second in the Alphabetical listing with a "New" graphic next to it. After a while I'll drop down the list to the "R's" unless I fork up more money.
This is where you want to be. You can pay something like $200 per month and be on top in the sponsered sites list.
Google, looksmart, AltaVista and others now charge from $99 to $300 to give you a good listing.

I'm only up there for about a day but I have 10 visitors already.
Fremont Servers 10-05-2001, 12:04 AM Is there anyway to be within top ten at this link?
1. Goto Yahoo.com
2. Put "web hosting"
3. Press "search"
Results:
http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=web+hosting

These results come from Google, which is a search engine. I would find out more about how Google does it's index and look at the top 10 sites. Design you site around the same ojective, check your metatags etc..
WebThingy 10-05-2001, 04:29 PM I think Google just uses a spider,
I had my page up for about a week before my usage stats showed that "GoogleBot 2.1" had visited my site....or perhaps that was the result of some submission from years ago ;)

These results come from Google, which is a search engine. Actually, no, that's not correct -- the listings on that page are not from Google. Yahoo returns results of four types, as you'll see if you do the search that Asia posted a link for: first on that page are "Inside Yahoo!" matches, then "category matches" which take you to Yahoo! categories about web hosting, and then "Web Site Matches," which presumably is the list in which Asia would like an improved listing. Those are, as the heading of that listing says, sites in the Yahoo! Directory -- that is, they are not from Google, they are sites that have been submitted to and accepted by Yahoo!.
You can see the Google-supplied results by choosing "Web Pages" from the links directly under the search box on that page. Yahoo distinguishes between "web sites," sites that have been reviewed by an editor and added to their directory, and "web pages," which are spidered and are not categorized. Notice that the "Powered by Google" logo appears on the "Web Page Matches" page, but not on the other pages of results.
If you did a very odd search, one that wouldn't match any of their categories, you'd be taken directly to a "Web Page Matches" page. For example, search for "red birds on fences": http://google.yahoo.com/bin/query?p=red+balls+on+fences
{NIRMANI} 10-05-2001, 10:43 PM Well, select a SPECIFIC category with FEWER number of sites; These specific categories show up top of the page; Don't put the site into thousands of other sites.
