Hello,
I have followed the threads here and did a lot of searches and now I am ready to post a question. My site is on Communitech (CT) right now. We have 350 MB of HD space. Overall, CT is a good virtual host (but bad support ticking system) although it has some restrictions that I wish to get away from. I realize that some of them are in place to keep the server running smoothly for the other sites on the server.
1. Not able to handle big downloads well. (Recently my site had a contest, and users came to download games that were all under 10MB, but started to get page errors.)
2. Only 3 anon. users for FTP
3. My webmaster can't get to root access
4. We want to store alot of files which means we are almost out of our 350MB.
When I started to search for dedicated servers, I was put off by the price because at the moment, the site is a "hobby" (an expensive one :( ) With these RaQs servers, it seems moving from a virtual to dedicated server is now within reach.
I looked at rackshack.com and cobaltrack.com and numerous others which were listed here. I'm not so sure which way to go. My site needs HD space, and the ability to handle the downloading of large files (nothing over 8MB). I have a forum but not too many people are on at once. I do have 6 sub-domains and wouldn't mind setting up at least 20. At least 4 IPs are a must as well. I also need up to 50 GB or so transfer a month.
One point, I have used HostPro, Pair and now CT as a virtual server and hope that a jump to a dedicated server will be my last (knock on wood.)
My webmaster suggested buying a server and going the co-location route. But co-location also seems to be high.
Can anyone give me some suggestions?
Thanks,
Carlos
