Presently here is what we have:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=1733670

A message from Vito: "Whoever decides to hop a ride with me had better bring their own CD or cassette if they want to hear their own brand of music. Otherwise you'll be stuck with listening to 5 hours of Andrea Bocelli... :D"

WHT meeting will start (considering the drive is 6 hours (according to Vito - I guess he is a fast driver) at 1 - 2 pm. Vito will be provided with my phone number and cell phone so that we can keep in touch.

We might pay a visit to several places, but all will be in Downtown area of Montreal. Among those named are: Casa Pedro, Newtown. We'll have a bite and hang out at some lounge/bar place.

When you see them could you beat them with a wooded spoon for me?

On a side note, be nice to have something similar like this in the easy coast. Jersey/Pa/NY.

Good luck with the meeting and by god I hope you all survive having to listen to Andrea Bocelli. :stickout:

For those who'd like to come from New York City, it costs around US $60 to get to Montreal with AMTRAK, but the timing is bad. It arrives in Montreal at 7 pm at night - late. That's also an adult price. If you're a student, you get a discount.

New York - Montreal
http://www.amtrak.com/trains/adirondack.html

Check other national train carriers. I'm really unfamiliar with train services.

Geez, what a bunch of lamers in Ontario. Nobody seems to be making the commitment to attend.

I honestly don't mind making the drive, but only if there's company with me to break up the monotony and make the time go by quicker. If I come alone, I'll bore myself to death!

So here's the deal. At some point in the next few (?) days, I will make a decision. If I have company, great. I'll drive. If not, I'll just take RSM-Royi's advice and hop on a plane instead.

So come on you lacsadasical Ontarians. Wake up!! I promise I'll leave Andrea Bocelli at home. :D

Anyways, at the risk of showing my lack of faith that anyone will come along, any ideas on the best airline to call for the best rate?

Vito, JetGo offers sale price (almost $30 per ticket - amazing, huh?) Regular fare though is $120 (I think both ways). Still cheaper. And I might meet you at the airport and drop you off, too.

Check for fares:
http://www.jetsgo.net/en/index.shtml
However, JetsGo often runs with delays.

Almost the same thing at AirCanada (only better and more flights):
http://www.aircanada.ca/e-home.html(flights at about 12-1 pm are $90 - both ways)

Best,

vito

Hmm. I think you're reading that wrong at JetGo, Art. I read it as $20 going from T.O. to Montreal (web rate) and 89.00 coming back. But even at 110 bucks, I'd fly. No brainer. Heck, driving a Jeep Cherokee, it'll cost me 100 bucks in gas...

But that would mean arriving in Montreal at 840 AM and leaving at 630 PM. That's OK though. I could enjoy browsing around all morning. Haven't seen Montreal for years.

Vito, are you sure that is the way you want it? That does seem a little early. You can practically arrive close to party's time and leave shortly after (afternoon flights are cheaper, too), but I do understand if you want to hang around the city since you come down.

Best,

vito

I'd prefer to arrive later, but from what I saw online, there were no options for later arrival. I will go back and look again.

You have more options with AirCanada. Plus, I think they stick to schedule better. Trust me, the two times I've chosen JetsGo, departure was delayed 2-3 hours.

Is that in regard of Montreal? If yes, then as was mentioned in the first post - the meeting will take place on Crescent in Montreal. Crescent is equivalent to Times Square in NYC.

We'll be meeting in some lounge/bar/coffee place at around 1-2 pm, will head to eat something and then spend the rest of the day in a good launch bar where we can actually sit and hold a discussion. Newtown is a good place, but I've checked it out and it is quite small inside. But I'll definitely find something better around there.

Exactly what I was thinking. It is usually a great place to hang out during the day, have a bite and a drink afterwards - not so many people inside. Also, there is a good place at AMC Forum @ Atwater, but its quite a walk (20 mins), and its not exactly "Downtown", so "no" goes to that.

Please confirm when you know for sure if you're coming along. I need that in order to send you the details later on.

Fortunately, we had rental cars with fuel in them. Friday morning, we headed West while trying to contact our travel agency (not yet open in Dallas). We had not yet decided whether to head to Chicago or Indianapolis, but had a couple of hours driving to do so.

About 60 miles west something astonishing took place. The first time I ever saw a group of grown men happy to see an open Denny's.....

We ended up driving to Chicago and flying home from there-glad to have "escaped" but feeling very bad for those who lived or were stranded in Detroit without electricity or water and, in many cases, with no where to find food. Most of Detroit did not get restored until Sunday afternoon. They were the last city back.

Actually, if memory serves me, Incognito, at the time you created a very poignant thread about your experience during the blackout.

Trust me. When you drive up to Montreal, I guarantee that the power will stay on. ;)

Vito Forgot my momeny of poignancy.....but yes....every mile away you drove, you smiled a bit more....but also felt sad for those remaining in the midst of it. We only got food (and water to drink) Thursday night because it happened to be our hotel had a cookout scheduled anyway.

Timbit is a word used for many things, many far different than that use to which Vito put it. It is also a registered trademark terms used by Tim Horton's. Timbits are nothing more than just "donut holes."The phenomenally successful Timbit (bite-sized donut hole) was introduced to the chain in 1976. Customers can buy these bite-sized treats in whatever quantity they prefer, with most people favoring the Snack Pack™ sizes of 10 Timbits®, 20 Timbits® or 40 Timbits®.

Artashes, to my knowledge, there were only 2 other times when WHT members got together.

The first one hardly counts. If you recall, early last year I tried to get an Ontario get together at my house. Many said yes, but in the end, the only person who came over was Myles (Porcupine). So that hardly counts as an "event".

The other time was when a bunch of us met in Vegas with Headsurfer.

Paul, this would be a fine choice indeed! And its very very very close to Montreal downtown center and to where we plan on meeting.

Of course, Ritz Carlton is one of the best hotels and it is located in the heart of Montreal.
http://www.ritzcarlton.com/hotels/montreal/

Rates are about $200 per night. Canadian dollars. That's about $160 US.

If you come early enough (even with someone), I'll pick you up from the hotel if you want, give a little tour of Montreal. We'll drive down to Port on Old Montreal part of city. But whether some Ontarians would like to see it as well, we can all go together.

Art, I used to have CN Rail as a customer for many years, and I used to visit their head office quite often. I remember they were located at 935 de La Gauchetière Street West. A few times I stayed at a very fancy hotel right across the street from CN. So the Hotel was on the south side of de La Gauchetière, just west of University. Do you know what that hotel is called? I can't remember.

Yeap, its tough to find more pictures of rooms, but believe me, I've been there before on lunches, conferences, seen the rooms.. It seems pretty good. It is clean, service is friendly... well, it'll be French service.. :D

Anyway, we had previous family guests stay there and they didn't complain. Whether it were the good manners or really good hotel. hehe..

The hotel is so well located and since you will basically just sleep there and hang outside, it shouldn't matter either way.

Oh, 10 PM is well enough for us to have enough party time. I think, considering whether Vito comes by plane or car, we should finish the meeting about 6-7 pm either way?

That is of course, for those who MUST leave. For Montreal users or those who can stay longer - we can figure something out what to do next.

Just moved out of Michigan. Odly enough, I'll be back in for that weekend. Though, it's for my company's first annual shareholder meeting on Sunday (10:30 am), which is the day everyone is getting together (I'll be about 1.5 hours south of you, .5 hours North of South Bend). I'd love to go except for that reason, and well, I don't drink. Anyone care for a soda? :D

That, and I also already have arrangements to carpool with someone down back to Louisville, KY...so I'm on a time limit when I'm there on how long I can stay. :(

If anyone plans one within 4-5 hours of Louisville, KY, I will be there. I had been planning to go to the hosting summit, however I'm not wanting to put down money on it now as it may be delayed.

jarekb has also confirmed presence. That makes (as of now):

Looking for confirmation:

Not bad, huh? Also Vito will update on who may be coming with him.

To all Torontians, the deadline to catching a ride with Vito is TUESDAY! Otherwise, he catches a plane.

Come on, Toronto! What is the matter with you? Its only 5 hours by car from you!

Well, I was just speaking with my buddy in the travel business who always handles all my flight arrangements. He checked availability and saw that in order to get any halfway decent departure and arrival times, I would have to book something now before they filled up.

So that's what I decided to do. I've booked my flight to arrive in Montreal 11 AM and leave Montreal at 9 PM. Done.

I know I said I would wait until tomorrow to decide. But given the lack of replies from any Ontarians even suggesting they might be coming along, I don't imagine I've left anyone without a ride. I honestly did not want to wait until flights got full.

Artashes, please PM me your contact info (landline, cell phone, whatever) so that I can touch base with you when I arrive in La Belle Province.

As well, I haven't been to Montreal for a little while. Are there any Internet Cafes in downtown area?

The time you got reserved sounds terrific, Vito. I will actually be able to give you a ride from and back to the airport. I'll tell you exactly closer to the meeting day.

In fact, I have a special system worked out on how I meet people at the airport, I'll pass some details to you. I'll PM you all my information.

What I can do is first drive you to Paul's hotel (if he takes care of you for a few hours - seems like he does), then go home, make sure everything's set with the meeting, and then come pick you guys up and we go the party together.

There are a few Internet cafes in town. One is just across the street from the meeting location. Corner of Bishop and Maisonneuve.

Best,

vito

Artashes, well done. Sounds like you have it all under control.

You know, you're unknowingly setting the standard here. Now all members around the world will have to get their own regional summits going, and do it with the organizational skills that seem to come naturally to you. :D

Vito

Artashes
01-12-2004, 12:23 PM
Thanks Vito, actually, here is a better plan:

Since you and Paul and his partner seem to be the only guys from outside of town, what we can actually do is go to his hotel straight from the airport, we pick them up (or you check e-mail first or whatever you want), and we go on brief tour of Montreal (Old Port, Downtown, etc). If you have any special places of interest you'd like to see, let me know so I can plan the route better.

Then we go straight to the meeting.

I don't think I'll have enough time to get home and back since you time of arrival is 11 am, add at least 30 minutes to that to get to Paul's hotel, at least 1 hour of tour - thats 12:30 already. And the meeting is going to be at 1-1:30 then, if you guys in town, we can schedule it a little earlier.

How does that sound? Vito, Paul?

No question, I'll be out late Saturday night. My friend's sister's band is playing in Manhattan, so I'll definitely be there. Because:

She's my bestest friend.
Her sister, brother-in-law (both of whom are in the band), and cousin Heather will all be there and they're my friends too.
I like the band enough that I'd want to see them even if they weren't my friends.
But: I was in Montreal for several months while in high school; it'd be great to go back as an adult -- and as someone with money.
I'd love to hang out with you guys.
While my initial thoughts were that it'd be an overnight trip, Vito's made me realize I could just fly in and out on Sunday.

So I just made a quick trip to travelocity.com... but was told this: We were unable to find flights from New York, NY (NYC) to Montreal Ymq, Canada (YMQ) on 1/18/2004.I'm sure there are options, so I'll make another attempt to find a flight later today, and decide by the end of the day whether I can make it. Not sure how much you planned on spending on airfare, JayC, but I found flights from Newark to Montreal. They're non stop flights. Round trip is around 600 bucks, though. Seems awfully expensive to me.

There are few available fares at www.CheapTickets.com

Check it out, see what your budget is - the cost there is around $600-800. Its all right if its too expensive though.

Just an update. I went to expedia, and $606 was the best price I can find. Hey I love you all, you're my best mates... but $600 is a little more than I can justify, considering I'll be coming off an almost all-nighter and will probably be half asleep anyway!

Hopefully next time.

That's ok, JayC, we'll miss you, but I wish we can all gather in NYC for a meeting one day. If I were you, I would have probably considered $600 a bit too much for a one-day spent as well.

Joe, first of all, thank you for trying to come down to Montreal for this Sunday. It is already a great day, well planned out and plenty of people within the industry will show up.

Second of all, I am VERY interested in checking out the peer1 center and, in fact, can come visit it together with Paul and his associate who, I think, arrives in the city on Saturday. Since I'll be driving the out of town folks anyway, we can all come visit it together, then proceed downtown to have a couple of drinks.

Since this is something I don't have time to arrange myself, could you just publicly announce what time is good for you and what time you'd like us to show up (as well as the exact address) and I'll manage to bring those who are interested and don't have the transportation, like Paul.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to tour the facility. It adds a great value to the whole WHT weekend meeting.

Joe! Great to hear. Are you coming down from NY?

Out of town folks are: Rusko, Ruler, Vito and you. The first two stay at: Ritz Carlton Montreal http://www.ritzcarlton.com/hotels/montreal/ (this is somewhat an exclusive place to stay). If you need more options, I can recommend a couple of other hotels as well.

If you guys need internet access, it was going into part of my plan as well. My university office is just a block away from the meeting place, no one is expected there on Sunday, so you could do whatever you want from there, except for browsing porn sites. :D

But it'll be up to you - Internet is the same everywhere.

Vito, well, it would be easier for someone in Montreal to bring a laptop with wireless Internet connection (satellite I take it). But if no one possesses such a gadget in Montreal and IF you're willing to bring it along, feel free to do so. Digital camera is more important. I'll bring my film-camera just in case, too. I was just thinking what other tech-toys we might have some use of during the day.

It might cause some level of uncomfortness though to carry it around. Plus, it'll be good for only brief periods of time. After all, I think we will all be busy chatting, and not using the Internet. That would be too geeky thing to do... I think. :D

rusko and ruler have arrived, after a prolonged scenic tour of the worse montreal neighbourhoods thanks to the driving directions from the nice folks at ritz carlton, in montreal.

artashes, please provide your cellphone number *with* area code, since our cellphones have no way to figure out the local area code.

Welcome to beautiful Montreal!

I will call you on your cell. Two people (including myself) are going to the tour. Would be fine if you joined. As well as anyone else who are in Montreal.

UPDATE: I talked to both Paul and Bill. They do not have a clear plan as of yet. As soon as they will know, they'll give me a ring on my cell phone.

I feel bad, though, cause they were taking a nap and most likely I woke them up. Well, not most likely. I simply did. :)

Best,

Jean-Pierre from Blinx Networks and Me are going to the tour! Paul (Rusko) and Bill (Ruler) are a phone call away, too.

Come join us, folks.

Best,
