View Full Version : Why no Hosting Requests anymore? I've got an idea...

I've been relying on WHT for information regarding Hosting Companies for a couple years now. I know they are a great source of knowledge and feedback. I've used them in the past to research hosts, and get the scoop on just about anything regarding hosts - the info I've gleaned has probably saved me from making bad decisions regarding selecting a host, and I'm sure it has helped others in this area as well.

My question: Why are we not allowed to post requests for hosting service any longer? Although I feel it is important to do research before making a decision on hosts, the "Offer" forums take virtually forever to hunt through, and it's really difficult to define one's needs without reading each and every thread. At least in the "Request" forum, one was able to outline needs and have them responded to.

My suggestion: Can WHT make some type of list (thread) and post it outlining certain more common and most requested needs, such as "Under $5/10/25/50 <etc> a month", "10 Megs or less/more"? It seems if there were a page for some of these most-commonly requested offers, it could be better for a lot of us - kinda a win-win for everyone maybe? I would even volunteer to help set it up!

My reasoning: I want certain things from a webhost (under $xxxx a year/month, need xxxMB space, need xxxGB transfer, etc), plus I want to find out some history on them and maybe some words of advice/caution from others - I think these basics are things most everyone is concerned with. For the most part, if you do a search on the host name you can get some feedback; but if you want, say, hosting under $40 a year, 50MB space, 2GB xfer, and FrontPage as minimums what does one do? Basically, you have to visit everyone's website to see what they offer - if WHT had something like I suggested above, it would be like one-stop-shopping!

Just an idea folks. If you have feedback as to how I could go about finding this info a little quicker/easier, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanx for listening! :D

Its not a bad idea. I like it.
It is a compromise and I think it may work.
I am not sure but I believe it went away because people begging for "free hosting" and companies offering deals that are too unbelieveable and they found out being that way. I am not 100% sure but that is my guess.

Well for what your saying is what web host directorys are for.

WHT is not a webhosting directory. Its a place to discuss webhosting with the occasional *Excessive* advertising :)

You can research hosts here, search in the offers but you if you want a ranged price go for a system that either does leads or hostsearch's ;)

Find the hosts at:
http://www.tophosts.com
http:/www.hostsearch.com
http://www.hostpulse.com

And then research them here via the search function. :)

I've moved your thread to the "WHT: Announcements, Suggestions, Feedback & Questions" Forum. :)

The return of requests, in some form, is not out of the question. But, it's not very high on the priorty list either.

By the way, She-Bear . . . . Nice sig. :)

I know there are lots of places "out there" to find webhosts, but the point I was trying to make was to maybe have something here, within WHT, because they are, in my humble opinion, a worthwhile and trustworthy source of info - as I mentioned in my first thread.

I also know what WHT is, and that it isn't *necessarily* a web-hosting directory per se - however, it IS where lots and lots of folks go specifically to try and find a reputable & honest host - after all, isn't this what the World Wide Web is pretty much all about - hosting someone's site?

I believe that WHT has a good reputation, and for the most part hosts know this and they basically would think twice before risking the wrath of some of the folks in here if they were to screw up and not behave responsibly. So, I just thought it would be a good idea - at least it seemed so to me.

And 'webworkz' has the right idea - to search out what seems to be a good host via the WWW and then research within WHT - I was just hoping to try and cut out the "middle-man". Additionally, you can find out more info on the host by looking them up some of the "who is" sites (one I use is dub dub dub dot whois dot sc) - this tells a little bit about the host such as how long they have *probably* been in biz, some contact info that may not show on their site and possibly some alternate contact names & numbers, as well as when it was registered and for how long.

Anyway, thanx folks for your input. It is appreciated! :D
