Complete beginner here. How does what Domain Name I pick effect[?] how search engines and such find me? Do sub-domains help? Be nice to use my own name www.myName.com so people looking for me could stumble upon me, but I might be wanting to attract some people to whom I could sell some things. Say I got some "poetry" related things to sell : " www.MyName " then SubDomain "poetry" etc... what does that do to searches ? Like I said, complete beginner here. Think I've picked a host, and will go with their PayPal, PayQuake payment system ... am just about to take the next step and register a Domain Name ( with Go Daddy ) . Thanks for any help.

Your domain name doesn't have much of an impact on search engine query results. Search engines used to mainly run off meta tags until they started getting abused, what they do for the most part now is they have their servers read over a copy of your site and document what sort of category your site would belong in. The reason they do that is so a website with an html page full of just 1,000,000 pointless words won't show up first all the time. They also base how much traffic your site gets on how high in the search engine results you end up.
Kind of like "You need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience" only in this case "You need traffic to get traffic".
Main point being, have content on your website and it will get picked up.
Sidenote: a lot of search engines ignore subdomains.
