I see that a lot of people have the ability to check and see if a domain is used on thier site. They don't really go into the registration of the domain, but they allow them to check and see if it is used.

I'd like to know how to do that. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

I think what shaggyboiler means is where can one get a good whois source code which can be added to his/her own site.

A quick search on Google for "php whois script" or whatever language you're familiar with should bring up some useful info.
