View Full Version : Ok Gals, Who's got the nicest A....
I've seen quite a few posts within WHT referring to women in various forms... two recent ones being...
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22315
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22249
Of course there have been quite a few others within WHT that have been more ummm... descriptive.
I'm thinking we have two choices here:
1) File a lawsuit and find out how much WHT really is worth
or
2) Give'm back some of their own medicine ;)
Since I've not near enough time for the lawsuit idea, I'm game for #2
There MUST be other posters of the female species noticing this... so...tell us...
Who has the nicest male ASCII around here?
I doubt they'd mind if we flaunted them around a bit :P

Not intentionally  :D
Time for
Dahlia 10-01-2001, 06:50 AM it's actually bugged me a bit when i read posts like those, but i never really said anything about it since i assumed i'd get the common response to this, "if you don't like what the topic is about, then don't read it." "no one is forcing you to participate in this thread." or something along those lines. even if i did participate and voice my opinion, i might be considered a flamer or troll.
reporting the posts to moderators i also didn't think would get much done since most of these threads show up in the lounge which is free-for-all posting, but i think some of the posters think this is friendly discussion that won't insult others? they've insulted me a few times, but since it has i just ignore the thread and move on to the more constructive posts which deal with more intelligent and interesting topics for all genders.
3:26am.. maybe i am "over-reacting" (as some of my guy friends can tell me when i get insulted with stuff like this) since the time means i'm probably so tired everything irritates me right now. LOL but the truth being, i just woke up for my shift so i'm not tired at all.
anyway, puts in a vote for kiwi because you know, they can be so tasty.
cbaker17 10-01-2001, 11:11 AM I would just like to say its a honor to have been nominated :) although i must say i cant imagine how those nakid pictures of me in my ascII could have got out on the net, must have been my ex, grrr......................
Oh well....
Anyhow i would also like to address why a chicken is getting more votes then me, i feel confident, im better looking than the common barnyard fowl, lets get those votes up!
Thank You...
JustinK 10-01-2001, 01:28 PM Dangit, all those years doing ascii art on AOL and it all got killed during the last format. :( No more psychotic easter bunny... Well, at least I'm up there. I don't post enough to get any votes though. ;)
JustinK 10-01-2001, 02:07 PM Because of this thread and my desire to find my ancient ascii art (which I never found and probably overwrote during a "in need of floppy" emergency) I found the following on ancient floppy disks:
3 disks full of graphics I snagged off websites from about 1991-2.
1 disk with a school report on some host I can't remember ever hearing about vs Galaxy Web hosting
A disk with a picture of my old friend Karla on it.
A disk with a school project picture on it (video class).
A disk with a ton of midi files on it.
A disk with my ascii editor and some ascii fonts (vb forms, not exe)
A disk with my first Visual basic program designed to be the terror of aol (never released due to not wanting anyone to actually use it).
I wanted my psycho bunny & psycho turkey. ::sobs:: I miss my ascii art.
ºv´¨`:·-={:(
(note: above ascii is from the 3rd version of my 2nd program and is best viewed in arial however they turned off the font changer on here so I can't set it to arial).
(note2: Arial is the best ascii making font. Verdana sucks)
cbaker17 10-01-2001, 02:32 PM Justink you have been banned from wht for the violation of forum rules: taking threads off topic!
As you well know this thread is all about me and why a chicken has more votes then both of us!
Perhaps your in cohorts with the chicken, in either case, you will be tarred and feathered.
Have a nice day, your friendly farmer Chuck!
JustinK 10-01-2001, 03:34 PM You have votes so hush. :oÞ

I can't help but to laugh at some of the things, especially in this thread (chicken!/Justin!) but on a serious note I would ask that you guys hear what Dahlia had to say as well.
In another thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22256) you guys were disgusted, angry, and shocked to see another web site with an image of an oriental man named "chink.jpg" but the same type of attitude does not seem to appear within these forums when the ladies are spoken about in often times more demeaning ways...
Just something to think about...while also noting many of your clients are female too ... hmmm

On a related note (he said, swinging miles off topic) an owner recently put her hosting company's site up for review. It was presented in a far different way to the normal technobabble that's so interchangeable on most sites.
It started me wondering about whether there was a market opportunity for female-run hosting companies to offer services directly aimed at women. (And before anyone starts getting hot under the collar about this, I mean in the same way that women-only clubs, fitness centres, advice groups prosper.)
Looking at a few domain names which were still available it looks like there hasn't been much movement in that direction and a Google search shows very little in that way.
However the success of blog sites would seem to indicate there might be a demand?
What's your opinion? Deb, Dahlia, lovelie? Or anyone?
(Shang immediately rushes out of the house to buy dress, wig and pantyhose...)
:)
(Shang immediately rushes out of the house to buy dress, wig and pantyhose...) Why? Do women actually still wear these things? :D
Seriously it'd probably sell.... I've experienced more than one pre-sales calls where the female on the other end of the line had made comments like "Wow, it's so nice to hear a female voice!" or "I like the fact that the company isn't owned by a man" (not realize my male husband does own the other half lol). I've also taken calls where the man on the other end of the line just can't seem to resist trying to make a date with me... which simply reminds me of the reason women may appreciate speaking with a host that wouldn't give them that same feeling.
Now PERSONALLY (and uhh yes I'm female) I don't feel the same things...but it appears many still do. Just like "Christian Hosting" or "Gay Hosting" etc I'm sure "A host for women, by women" would have its niche market as well. However if it was done without the consideration for the REASON people would be inclined to go with a "female" host then it obviously wouldn't work. If serious and understanding of the needs of this market then there is no reason it couldn't work...just a matter of how you approached it. I think community would a be big deal for this host to allow the "club" atmosphere between the users.
It's an old business rule but a niche market is a niche market regardless of the niche ;)

Well Dahlia, I don't think they "get it". But they sure are proud of whatever it is they're voting for LOL\
I'd hate to bend this thread into a deep discussion about 'getting it', especially if it was just a lighthearted poll about a few guys' posts. It seems it is somewhat more than that though...
One thing I've realized (during my short time on this marble), is that people can be offended over anything. I don't mean this in a bad way (really, don't freak out just yet). What I mean is, no matter what, often times there is *something* that at least one person finds offensive. That is ok, though often it makes it difficult (note the extreme vagueness, heh).
I'm actually surprised that Deb feels that those two threads are in the same class as the chink.jpg. I can't see how anyone wouldn't find that offensive.
It must have been my comment, "Personally I find any women that moves entertaining..." in the first thread referenced that won it its place. Maybe it was taken the wrong way, but I didn't mean for it to sound degrading, nor be degrading at all. I meant that there is something about a woman, almost any woman, that for some reason, drives men crazy. I can't explain it, but in the past I've had so many female friends, and they've been much different than male friends.
It may have been construed as, "Any naked piece of donkey dancing up on the stage entertains me!" -but that isn't what I meant by the comment. I don't know, maybe I'm not explaining it well enough, but I assure you, it was a small comment, and even with my attempt at an explantion, it may still offend someone. (Which is ok, as I said, it is likely that something is offensive to at least one person -in other areas than just these posts).
Women discussing hot men in ads doesn't disgust me either. I guess I've just been around so many women who do it at bars, and elsewhere, and my friends play along, picking out the 'hot' ones and encouraging our friends to go up to them. This is more difficult if they are in an advert of course, but I reassure them that the models are all gay and wouldn't be interested in them (I know... OFFENSIVE, it is a joke, I know many gay guys, all of which have a sense of humor, they joke with me, I joke with them).
Anyway, I think there is a difference between discussing women... and discussing women in a negative way. Although I don't feel that discussing women in ads is negative, I'll try to respect the views of others who feel it is, and watch comments about women in general so women feel welcome here too. My aplogies...
edude 10-02-2001, 09:46 AM You see! chicken has spoken his wise words again, this justifies the reason why i voted for him!
lovelie 10-02-2001, 10:51 AM Racism does sometimes seem more offensive than sexism, but perhaps that's because sexism now seems diluted because we're more accustomed to it, since it happens more often? I encounter women being objectified AND degraded every day, whether it's using them to promote products, a guy whistling from a car (where he's safe.. grr) or a comment on a forum intended to be funny; and people don't even notice it. Women are commented on so much more often than men that I double take when a women comments on a man. This thread seemed more out of place to me than Dylan's hot young chicks (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22249) thread.. and far more out of the ordinary. How sad!
As for the "hosting For women, By women" idea, I think it could definitely work. It's done all the time in the teen community (http://www.gurlpages.com, http://www.jyoshikou.com); though it would be more difficult in the adult (and paying) hosting world, because the ratio of female to male websites is so much lower. I also think it highly probable that no matter how you go about it, such a venture would attract negative attention; but that could just work out to be good advertising! :stickout
Someone else can try it though. I'm not so interested that I'm willing to risk chopping out 50% of my customers. ;)
cbaker17 10-02-2001, 11:43 AM Out of curiosity was my post in dyalsn thread offensive to anyone, Ive reread it 5 time and dont see anything close to being offensive in it.
JustinK 10-02-2001, 12:14 PM I'm just here for the entertainment and the easy questions. ;)
I have to say I try my best with saying "woman", but force of habit and years of vile high school slang make me slip into saying "chick". My friend always remind me though with a quick kick to the thigh... After I regain feeling in my leg I'm a little more word-aware. A lot of this demeaning stuff is really taught to people while growing up and sticks with them. We find things funny on the television and absorb that, while in reality's world you'd probably get a lawsuit slapped on you for saying 1/8th of what the character said in one line.
I get to deal with the anti-woman personality all the time actually. My dad has his share of complaints about all the women in the company he works for. "They nag too much" "They're too emotional" "They won't stop bugging me" I don't know how my mom keeps from severely hurting him. I can see her eyes forming these tightly clenched fists. Usually I just munch and let him get it out of his system just because he'll startup with his little "I have the right to..." speech later on. For the love of a devine worshipped religious element, will he just get on with life?!
Dahlia 10-02-2001, 01:57 PM i personally don't have a problem with the word 'chick', i've probably used it a few times myself. what i have found offensive here isn't that there is discussion of woman by men, but how they are discussed.
for instance, two threads in particular that really have gotten to me is a long ago thread about pwi (i think it was their company they were talking about) who had "sexy" phone girls. and then the thread about the "hot young" chicks in ads.
the words "sexy and hot" are what get to me. it gave me the impression that the people who started the thread and joined in on it believe the only thing woman are good for in the hosting industry is their sex appeal and that is the only ability a woman could give to a hosting company. way generalizing, but you know "woman like to over-react and get emotional".
i find it degrading a little that woman are talked about this way on this forum, and i really can't see how posting such things in public can make any of the hosts here look good to our gender. this is a business type forum, even if these posts are being done in the lounge, i still can't see that they are productive in any way, shape or form.
a post above asked my opinion on what i think about a woman starting a hosting company geared towards only woman. the fact it would "only" be for woman is what i am against. i don't think there should be a line between whom a company hosts, just like i don't agree with posts here that lean towards talking just about woman (in a way i find degrading), because it alienates other members of the forum. in a perfect world for me, it would be where woman and men can discuss issues in the business world without having to cross that gender line. anyway, what do you think about a man starting a company just for men? i don't think it would ever happen personally, i don't see why any smart business person would go out to intentionally alienate part of its consumer group (especially when the amount of men purchasing professional hosting outweighs woman who are doing so, although woman are just as important to the industry. alienating either would be suicide.).
if you are at a bar with friends or at a site that is a club or something i think it fits there, but here, even though this is the "lounge" i still don't see it being a good place to chat about this. it's unprofessional in my view.
anyway, men dominate this forum, so why would i have ever thought there would be a chance to get this kind of degrading behavior to stop. silly me.

cbaker17 10-02-2001, 02:41 PM I think most men are ignorant and dont even realize were offending someone most of the time, perhaps we have yet to evolve as fast as woman.
Another thing is that with the way alot of woman dress now adays their contributing to the way men see woman as a whole.
I see young girls out on the street no more than 13-14 years old that just make me sick with how little they wear anymore, where are their parents?
Perhaps woman contribute to this problem as much as men.
Theres nothing more attractive in my book then a professionally dressed woman i can hold a intelligent conversation with.
edude 10-02-2001, 02:45 PM Charles your comments are spot on, i think the parents should set "more" of a example tp their children.

Well, the point of the post about specialised women's hosting was to see if the female members of this forum thought there would be a demand for it - as there is in other industries. While I agree with your point about it alienating the male section of the market, that is a market which is more than covered by the tremendous competition out there amongst hosting companies. It would be, possibly, a USP in an industry full of the same marketing plans, the same advertising and the same products.
The points you and others made in the thread earlier are an example of how women can be made to feel uncomfortable in a predominantly male culture and thus we've had the foundation of women-only fitness centres, clubs and professional associations, for example. And, as Deb mentioned earlier, women's hosting could probably only be done properly by a female owner who understood the rationale of the market. My question was not put to "ghetto"-ise women, merely from a business opportunity point of view.
And we do have men's hosting run by men - it's extraordinarily profitable and known as "adult hosting". ;)
Rgds
(Ducks as he awaits posts from outraged female owners of porn sites)
(Ducks as he awaits posts from outraged female owners of porn sites) LOL my thoughts exactly :P I'm actually surprised that Deb feels that those two threads are in the same class as the chink.jpg. I can't see how anyone wouldn't find that offensive. The posts I listed were just "examples" of what has happened...not by any means meant as a way to pinpoint this or that post as the culprit. I wouldn't say Chicken's comment about women being entertaining were offensive... It just happened to be one of the most recent posts that brought up "women" and probably was a bad example (laziness on my part for not digging deeper). My post was an attempt, with light humor, to acknowledge that it is happening on these forums and it probably is something that should be considered. I wouldn't expect anyone to make a dramatic change but I would imagine a thread such as this, that at least brings the issue to the table, would cause someone to at least think twice before posting. If we even made it that far then we've made it less likely for the many females around here to be offended and less likely for the "offender" to loose a client over it.
In many threads we talk about how the host's actions on these forums say a lot about their business. I think that should be considered with the way we speak about other human beings as well. When you speak about women as simple sex symbols it is offensive to many of the ladies here that work so hard to be thought of differently.
I wouldn't stress on "this or that" comment really... I think all we're asking, if anything, is to be concious... not paranoid... of what you're saying. Would your sister, mother, co-worker be offended? If so..do you still want to say it? If yes..go for it. If not... thanks :)

Whew, well glad you weren't overly offended at my comment at least. I think part of the 'problem' may be that most men probably wouldn't be offended over threads like the ones you are talking about, either way (men or women dicussed). Maybe it is that they would be less offended, more of the time, if that makes sense.
In many ways we are just different. I don't think I'd be offended, even if the poll was, "Which guy has the hottest buttocks?", though I get the feeling that wouldn't fly so well with the ladies, heh.
There was a study done by some college students once which really made me think about how different we are. Since it is inappropriate for the forum, I won't go into it other that the results were completely opposite, yet the same question was asked to 100 men, and 100 women. The fact that we could be so different didn't surprise me, just that it stuck in my head for some reason.
I'm just babbling now...

As far as female hosting, I dont think that would work too well. For a limited market plus advertising in the market...
