I prefer nix based servers purely because they are more stable, others require NT or 2k for certain applications though.

It's not really a black and white sort of issue, I'm sure somebody on this forum can give you a lot more information about the two than I can ;)

Well it depends on your requirement. If you are looking for hassel free hosting than *nix is the best deal. You can run ASP on *nix and now a days most of the application are platform independent.
For NT or 2K you have to buy licence but *nix is free.

Assuming you're talking about a virtual-hosting account, go with Linux/Unix unless:
1) You need to run an MS Access database
2) You want to run ASP/VBScript scripting (although Linux servers can run ASP, most don't offer the extra goodies you need to do things like send e-mail or upload files)

more reasons for NT hosting:

1. Windows media support
2. Frontpage 2002 support
3. Some people like coldfusion to be run on win-box
4. Sql2000 support.

Think about this... there are over 80,000 viruses for crappy inferior microsoft products like winblows, NT, and 2000. IIS sucks! Anyone remeber CODE RED, Mellisa, and now Nimda?

There are only about 80 or so known TRUE viruses for Linux and only a small few for a mac but for hosting id suggest using Red Hat or another version of Linux.

There is an abundance of documentation and support.

Plus Microsoft blows...just remember that ! heheheh

..either platforms can do what the other can... Its better to choose the platform you're more comfortable with and have a better understanding (with all other things being equal)

Nix servers are much easier for scripting I have found...

In a case you do not want to spend all day near your box - select *nix box (solaris on sun server, freebsd or linux on a pc). Otherwise, select windows and relax - you will have fun ;-)

well most have already put out valid points but figured i'd add my view for the heck of it!

above all use what you know. If you want to be a viable host you should know what you're working on. if something breaks you don't want to tell a bunch of upset people that you'll get it fixed soon as you can go to BN to buy a admin book for your os :D
