Hi everyone,

We're in the process of trying to hunt down a good web hoster.

The one we have now, is killing our budget, mostly Bandwidth usage. They provide around 10gig now, but we usually do around 25 to 30 gigs.

Here's some thigns we will need to over come. Most Important:
1. Unix Box
2. Handle loads of traffic, around 3 million+ hits a month.
Don't ripe us off with bandwidth overcharges, $15 per gig is crazy, we currently use about 25 to 30 gigs of bandwidth per month.
3. Handle CGI Apps like; DCForums, AdCycle, SSI Polls, DCIndex, etc. The first two our the main CGI resource hogs.
4. Admin Control Panel
5. MySQL Database 1 or 2
6. Telenet Access - to setup Adcycle on the server.
7. Cost between $35.00 to $49.00 per month on a pre-pay annual account. Remember, pre-pay usually means 15% discount so we are looking at $35.00 to $49.00 after the pre-pay discount.
Server Space at least 300mb to 500mb or more.
If we can get URLs to these providers and comments from the gallery about how good they are, we'd much appreciate it.

Thanks!

GoleyC

I know this is a tad bit out of your budget, but with that much transfer (30 GB) and the possibility of it growing (since that is the upper range of what you are currently using), coupled with the apparent heavy CGI usage, have you considered a dedicated server?

A Raq should be good enough for your site's needs from what you've told us, and they come at about $99 a month (or so I've read). I'm not sure who sells them, but it might be worth your time to look into them. :)

Good luck!

I agree, a colo or dedicated server is what you need.

With that much bandwidth and running cgi applications, etc. on a shared machine you are likely to run into problems and with the expectation that you will grow, you should get your own server.

Angel78,

Did you even read our post, hello! We said between $35 and $49 for these kinds of things on a pre-pay annaual basis, which means AFTER the discount not BEFORE.

We don't need post like yours..we want real post that have suggestion and or answers.

Thanks!

c c c what is wrong with you?

http://www.site5.com/services/shared/comparison.html

webexecutive plan 600mb + 27 gb transfer =24,95 $ but as you are going really to use that much bandwidht i doubt that anyone would sell gb for 1,3 $ exepct for rackshack.

have a nice day and calm down

You may be able to get some decent bandwidth for $2.50-$3 GB X 30GB = $75 - $90 a month.
Less 15% discount = $63.75 - $76.50 per month in bandwidth costs alone.
Although it's possible to find someone selling bandwidth for $1 GB; you probably are going to be unhappy with their service (we see it all the time) or the quality of the bandwidth.
If your site is important to you, I would suggest you double your budget.

Ahhh, this is what we wanted, input and feedback. That $35-$49 was without going over the bandwidth allotment. If an account says 20gigs of bandwidth per month, then what ever the cost per gig thereafter we'd pay for that we used.

If things get to crazy, we'd opt for other options like: Collate the server so we can balance our site between two domain names. We'd move most of our CGi apps to the second domain name and free up some of the load.

Or go dedicated if the budget will soak up the cost..right now we cannot afford $150 to $300 a month for a dedicated server. But we do hope as things settle down in the world of money crunch, we will be able to do these things, but until the economy stablizes, then we are stuck with virtual hosting.

On a side note: Any good Dedicated Unix Boxes out there, we might has well start looking into them and getting ready for a budget crunch for the future.

Thanks!

I suggest checking out Communitech.net

They are really an industry leader, and a very stable company that has been around for a long time. I have never used them, or heard anything about them, but a friend of mine has an account with them, and uses about 60 GB of bandwith a month. They offer 500 MB or so and 40 GB bandwith a month for around $50.00 a month if you prepay for a year.

I can't suggest them, but I suggest you look at what they have to offer. Search the board for reviews, and good luck!

NOTICE: I just did a search on the forums of myself, and it seems as though communitech just plain out sucks. My friend too had their account shut off for "Excessive CPU Usage," but I thought his was a unique case, Guess not. Sorry about the bad advice, good luck though!
