Hi,

Mail.com gives people email address at almost 100 or so different but real good domains.

I have one it is xxxxxxxx@engineer.com . They have almost 100 other real good domains that you can select to get your address at.

Whenever you go to mail.com to check your email, you have to signup with (xxxxxxxx@engineer.com) as your username.

You can not go to just engineer.com to check your email.

Same is the case with ALL other domain names.

If you go to mail.com and then click then signup link to get your email address Or just click the link below
http://mail01.mail.com/templates/common/us/username_frame.htm

You will see ALL these domains.

Q: Do you think they really own ALL these domains? OR just somehow let you create email address using these other people's domains?

Any comments are highly appreciated?

Thanks.

Rick

I think they own them all. They bought them a long time ago

If they dont own them then they probably have a deal with the domain owner. They wouldnt be using a domain without the real owner knowing about it ;)

I mean is it legal to use a domain just as a username in an email address at your site (where you@example.com is a username), but you do no own the example.com domain?

Thanks.

They do own all the domain names and hence are able to create email addresses @fancydomainsnames

The reason you cannot goto engineer.com and login is because they didnt want to dilute their brand - they are promoting just one brand name i.e. mail.com - which according to me is a smart thing to do

Also they don't need individual ip's to do this.....
Not that that really matters. :D

is Mail.com a free service? strangely, there is very little information on their site without signing up.

Who knows, I certainly have no need for it.....
I have enough personal domains to keep me busy....

Mail.com or IName.com has been around since the pre-historic age (in the Internet sense of course). They used to have A LOT more domain names. You can bet on that they own all those names. It's still kind of free, but don't count on that for too long as the Internet has been moving from primarily "free" services to a paid world. Sign! Can't believe that we have actually come such A LONG WAY!

Mail.com, email.com, is still owned by EasyLink Services Corp, formerly iNameCorp. They own some 1200 plus premium domains, including Paris, Rome, etc.... Some They lease out. They dont respond to email about their domains, and are very hard to contact.
