Fried both hard drives in my personal machine today... the main hard drive AND the backup one... just my luck :(

Anyone else have extraordinary bad luck today?

Well yeah, someone is launching DoS atacks onto my work PC all day long. The IP is blocked but he probably didn't get it yet. :D

Ok, earlier today I backed up all my important stuff onto cd, just because I've never backed up any of my info before, and thought it was time to start.

I have never had any problems with my harddrive...ever, it's never crashed, I've never lost any info, nothing like that.

...Am I the only one?

I've had more than one machine have hardware failure in one day.

I use to back up to a second machine, which seemed like a good idea. Except, one day my machine's hard drive got damaged from a mobo problem. Unfortunately, my other machine's Power Supply blew, that same day.

My worst loss happened 10 years ago. I was in college, working on a 386 running Win 3.something. I had just finished a 15 page term paper about 24 hours before it was due. Throughout the writing process, I had been periodically saving to the hard disk and then copying that file to a floppy disk.

So, I finished the paper, saved it to the HD, inserted the floppy, and dragged the file in the file manager to copy the completed document to the disk. Power surge. Big time. Fried the surge suppressor, which caused the computer to shut down violently right at the beginning of the file transfer.

First thing I did was to take the computer down to the repair shop at the school. An hour later, I was told that the floppy disk was empty (Still don't know how that happened) & the hard disk was majorly fragged. He saved all the allocation units he could find before replacing the HD & reinstalling all the software.

All we were able to retrieve was the first half of the first page of the paper.

It's now 4 hours after the catastrophic event. I called my professor at home to explain my problem & ask for an extension to rewrite the paper. His answer, (paraphrased - this was 10 years ago, remember?) "The paper is due in 20 hours. Late papers will automatically get an "F" grade. No exceptions. Tough luck about the computer."

So, I started writing.

My participation in threads like these inherently leads to bad luck.
