I just got a dedicated server a RaQ3 for my web sites and my host is providing DNS for me for free so i did what they told me to do i sent them a list of all the domains and what IPs each site was using then i went and changed my domains to use there name servers at network solutions i did a whois look up for my domain at internic.net and there name servers are already listed so i figured the DNS had went through.

Now when i type in mydomain.com it takes me to a page that just says "this domain is being hosted buy them with a list of what they offer" and it's not a place holding page because i changed it so i called them and asked what was going on the guy on the phone said there DNS was pointing to the wrong IP number and that it will take 24hrs for it to point to the right one so i told him what the ip should be and he changed it then i sent them the list of what domains used what ips again just to make sure they got it right this time.

What do you guys think? Im about ready to tell them to just cancel me! I got the thing on monday i only moved 1 domain to the raq to be safe and i wasnt in a hurry because the other host where my sites are being hosted on is paid for till the middle of next month. I've called them everyday this week trying to get things to work right they told me they would call me back in 30min but of course they never did and the server should be setup right because the guy who set it up in the first placed went in and checked everything while we was on the phone i always talked to the same guy so i wouldn't have to explaine it to someone else again.

Im about ready to quit and get a job again i've been through a lot of host and never have had this much trouble but they where all virtual now im thinking twice about moving the other sites to them and there ad page still comes up today when you type in mydomain.com

I can do a whois now on my domain that goes to there page saying "mydomain.com is being hosted buy them" and the IP address from the whois is the right one so why am i getting there page and not mine? looks like i have to call them again.

Dave,

I've had a similar experience to you, where my domain for a site on a server was set up incorrectly. It can, and does happen, when the domain records on the server somehow get mixed up (through a technical glitch or human error).

It usually takes 24-48 hours for DNS to fully clear through and ensure that domains are properly 'resolved'. That said, from the sounds of it, this company does not sound very competent (or its tech support team anyway). Usually I'd give it 3 days maximum before I switch.

Would you mind naming the company and the domain? It may be a bad apple which we know of, and may be able to give you some more ideas.

If you still wish to persist with dedicated servers, we know of a few options where tech support is far better and will help you every step of the way.

Good luck.

Why don't you do your own DNS? I mean the RaQ3 has it built in.

The real question is if you type in the IP address in your browser does it pull up what you expect i.e.
http://<ipaddress>

since that should pull up the same as
http://<your domain.com>

if the ipaddress and domain name are pointing to the same thing then nothing is wrong ... you just need to setup your hosting directory correctly

if the ipaddress and the domain are different then it would be something they are doing wrong

It's all working right now i guess the DNS just hadn't went through yet.

I could type in my ip and get the correct page. I don't understand if there DNS was pointing to the wrong IP address why did the page say my mydomain.com is hosted buy them that page was not on the raq like i said i changed the index pages and could put in my ip number and see my site...... I just over reacted :)
