Have my own server, but would like to put a file out there
that can be downloaded as fast as possible by cable modem and DSL, etc. The file is about 1.2 megabytes and would be downloaded by a couple hundred people per month.
Have had trouble with truncation from my own server and
haven't been able to figure out why using Xitami.
Anyway, still want to have the fastest upstream to our clients.

By Xitami you mean this:
http://www.xitami.com/

Can't help with that really, but basically 1.2 megabytes * 300 or even 500 is still very small - basically any normal webhost should be able to provide quick downloads for you. Just look around for the smallest accounts possible - you should be able to find one that suits your needs from a reputable provider.

Looking for 256K bytes per second or faster.

That's still seriously not an issue. Most hosts that have a dedicated server (not a reseller) have the ability to transfer at 10 megabits or better - the limiting factor is going to be the cable modem or dsl line that is downloading it, not the server.

You are the experts, but my experience has found many
servers start slowing down transfers when they see
somebody is downloading that fast. I tried Cox Communications
vitual hosting and it just didn't perform. Trying to find a server
that is on the backbone for consistantly fast downloads from
anywhere in the country.

Since when did Cox offer virtual hosting? Perhaps I'm blind but I've never seen it listed on their website.

As for hosting. Any web host should be able to handle your needs. It's not like your asking for some serious bandwidth.

Not sure how long Cox has had it, but gave it a try.
They said the cgi-bin allowed programs written in C, etc, but
when I put out my first executable it was denied for security.
It was something like $29 a month and is mostly for store fronts
since it is farmed out to another company. A few google searches
and you'll find it easily.

hah hah - a search for 'cox web hosting' also comes up with this (http://members.fortunecity.com/coxfan/)

Anyway, you should be able to find something way less than $29 that should handle your needs pretty well. Have you looked at the offers forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=4) for some deals? You can ask the hosts that post there for details as to their network speeds.

No, I haven't. Just found this BBS. It's really nice!
I'll check it out next. Appreciate all the help.

MarkDotson,

You may want to check out this thread (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=38&threadid=1215575) I created on another forum I frequent. The first 200 or so posts are concerning simpli.biz (http://www.simpli.biz) because I wanted to test their server speeds. The latter posts are regarding a speed test file (http://www.askross.com/MadonnaMTVRebate.zip) hosted on my Idologic.com resellers account.

Found speed of your server very close to HotSpot.
Hotspot and your were both about 370KB from midwest.

When using Windows 98SE noticed a substantial performance
decrease so these tests are very accurate unless using the
same machine (at least from here.)

By the way, they still haven't responded. Send email everyday.
Anybody else want to try getting anything sent to
mailto:support@hotspotwebhosting.com maybe they just ignore
us.
