View Full Version : ServerMatrix or Managed.com ?
Hostcube 01-02-2004, 12:38 AM Hello,
Like some of you know, I am in need of another dedicated server. I have some at EV1 and I am looking to buy a P4 somewhere else.
I was going to give managed.com a try, but after i saw that they might be unitedcolo and all im kinda scared to go with them at this time. I then heard of ServerMatrix.com today. (The Planet)
What I need is a P4 2.4 or 2.8 GHz, 1GB Ram and 1000 GB Bandwidth and cPanel
MANAGED: 85$ (105$ after first month)
ServerMatrix: 149.99 (WHT Special)
What do you guys think ? Any feedback on ServerMatrix ? To be honest, i heard about The Planet, but not much, So help would be appreciated :)
Thanks!
gate2vn 01-02-2004, 12:44 AM a vote for ServerMatrix
swijaya0101 01-02-2004, 12:56 AM servermatrix ... their email support is quite slow response .... but the phone support are excellent ... i called them few times early in the morning US time ... and they pick up the phone after 1 ring tone.

Don't look only at price, look at support too!
Managed.com support 9to5 closed on weekends, so if your server go down on Friday night you have to wait till Monday to get support. If it doesn't matter to you if your server is download for the weekend, then get the cheapest. ;)

Hostcube 01-02-2004, 02:32 AM questwtg Holy crap you saying anything... Just stop trash talking..
managed.com offer 24x7 For reboot! the 9x5 is for managed services..
Man stop learning before posting.
I know managed.com are cheap. Im asking for people who had experience with those company. Not just monkey's like you who come here to trash..

Once again, your assumptions are grossly incorrect. We fixed 10 servers last weekend on 3 servers today -- New Year Day.

I don't have any exp. with Manage, although I do like them and plan to try them out in the future.
SM is great, no complaint so far, great up time, phone support etc. I'm happy.
But if the Managed.com's reputation keeps going like this, I will go with them. I do like ONE-TIME hardware upgrade fee very much, in which SM doesn't have, nor they plan to have (lots of requests in SM forum about one-time upgrade, and they ignored them).

Not exactly true .
If you need a reboot its avalaible 24/7
If you fubar something more serious you have to wait for office hours.
cywkevin 01-02-2004, 04:04 AM I'm looking into managed as a backup solution. If they can carry their own weight I might even use them for a secondary location. I think a lot of these bad reports are from people that expect full management on unmanaged servers and can't fix simple problems themselves. I could be wrong and true some things can't be fixed remotely but a large portion of everyday problems can be fixed by a competent system admin and if you don't know how to fix a specific problem it never hurts to ask a consultant as chances are someone else has had to deal with the exact same situation.
TR Seeks 01-02-2004, 05:28 AM I would say go with server matrix. If your server goes down you are more likely to get it back up again quicker
wheimeng 01-02-2004, 05:35 AM I don't think they are comparable. SM is way better than managed.com. I might be bias, but I wouldn't go with managed.com due to the fact its too cheap, too risky for business.
jobvdsande 01-02-2004, 05:41 AM i would go with the servermatix. THey have been around longer... and perhaps that sounds kinda stupid... but they have already dealt with the growing pains...
Managed.com is a very tempting offer, but i would see how they do after half a year or so, when more reports start coming in.
essexguy 01-02-2004, 06:13 AM they are very much two very different companies.
the old saying of "you get what you pay for" creeps to mind.
if your a very competant systems admin and never need help then managed.com could suit you because they offer an "unmanaged" service.
They are also very cheap so people that expect the earth from them should really take a look at themselves in the mirror. I have a server with them, and have been extremely happy, but even still for the amount I pay I do not expect the kind of service of what I expect from SM.
SM are an excellent company with good prices, they have been around longer and I hardly ever hear a bad word about them.

1. I don't think Managed.com's price is much cheaper than SM. In fact, they are very close in the price, so by saying "you get what you pay for" , does this apply to SM too?
2. Yes Managed.com offer unmanaged server, but does SM offer better managed server in anyway? NO. So you're saying SM is for newbie and Managed does not? FYI, SM offers pretty much the same at managed.com except the Gold and higher price, in which you have to pay.
SM have what, 7 gig-es and a VERY robust network compared to Managed's 1gig-e line, they've been lucky so far that no outages have occurred (that i've read).
My vote goes to SM, though I haven't tried Managed yet (tempted for backup though).

I would not say they are close in price to be honest. Ok for $105 a month you can get a p4 2.4Ghz machine with 80 GB hard drive and CPanel, this is on a 100MBit port with Managed.com
If I want the same with SM I would have to pay a total of $159.00 each month, also a $49 setup fee which managed.com do not have.

I did not mention at all that SM is for a newbie. I was simply trying to state that if you need help at all at times then SM maybe the better solution. The fact that Managed.com only really have experienced techs available during office hours tells you that. So if you go with managed, com, break something, you can't expect it to be fixed straight away as if you were with SM.
By the way I am not talking about "managed" services, I mean you could incur costs by either company when requesting help.
mainarea 01-02-2004, 10:28 AM I think it's a little shady that the main page says $55/month and says CPanel/WHM. http://www.managed.com/celeron.htm says CPanel/WHM and $55 too, it doesn't mention that CPanel costs extra. Once you finally get to the order page, you see that it's $19.95/month. They should at least change it so it isn't deceptive, such as change the text to "CPanel/WHM for only $19.95/month".

Well its not so true ,they have reboot services in weekends as well. But advanced support team not there on weekends.
And Managed.com is semi-managed+ not fully managed but better then semi-managed. they have third party software installations for free ,and free os restore and free os reinstall ,free kernel recompile and more...
