Because you never defragged before.

Seriously..........I had the same problem, before I understood the importance.
Windows couldn't do it. I finally had to download Diskeeper; and it fixed it fine.
Now, needless to say, I defrag on a regular basis.
Wait for someone else to reply before you go out and get another program though.
Maybe someone else has a better plan ;)

you may want to try to boot into safe mode and see if it will work that way. That can make defrag work..

As it most likely says, something may be writing to the disc, changing things so that it is forced to start over and over. You can try shutting down everything but explorer in task manager also.

Diskeeper is available as trialware Here (http://www.executivesoftware.com/downloads/menu.asp) ;)

Yea I had a problem where it simply couldn't defrag, that was before I knew anything about computers...Long story short, I formatted, and haven't had a problem since.

Release the Ctrl key when you see the Desktop dialog box that indicates Windows 98 is running in safe mode.

Alternatively you can also tap F5 to get into safe mode if you're just turning on the computer.

But, as Relyc warns, you may end up needing to do a complete format.

And then again. . . . I can't say enough good things about Diskeeper.

And, again, you may want to wait for someone else's opinion. As sometimes that AnIdiot thing overtakes me and I didn't even see it coming

Did you try Chicken's suggestion??

To add to that, I have a USB hub attached to my computer, and even after shutting everything off but systray and explorer, I was still having write problems. Pulling the plug on the hub did the trick, and now I can defrag at will. Might help someone out if they're having the same problem.

Cable or DSL ?

Unplug your computer from the modem. Any action by the disk and the program will restart.

crtl+alt+del and get rid of any running processes which could be reading / writing to the disk.

Also, if you haven't defragged at all, and had your hdd for quite some time... now may be the time to reformat - you will be amazed at how quick it is afterwards
